I enjoyed every aspect of this Japanese drama. Aware that it is based on the true events of the real Aya who suffered from the disease, it gave so much more meaning to the story. I particularly found the family moments heart clenching and very tear-jerking. Even though this drama is about 11 years old, even 50 years from now, this drama will still be unforgettable and memorable for its amazing story, acting and music.

The story was well paced and meaningful. It followed a series of events with every episode becoming sadder and sadder. The saddest scene for me was with one of the family 'arguments' and the sister was saying how amazing Aya was. It made me cry so much. Everything made sense in the episodes. I found the short extracts from the real Aya's diaries submitted at the end of each episode a smart move. It added to the reality behind the drama. At the end of each episode, I would read what the phrase was for the episode this time, and after reading it, I would feel depressed once again. By the way, Asou Haruto was such an amazing character. He was definitely my favourite character even though he never existed from the real happening.
The acting was superb! Sawajiri Erika is such an amazing actor in my opinion. All the actors did a really good job for every scene. Bonus, I really enjoyed Nishikido Ryo's presence in this drama. Not only was his acting great, he's also really good looking. Narumi Riko was so good in those moments when her character was speaking up. I admired her acting. And to think that most of these actors (SE, Nishikido R, Narumi R, etc) were teenagers at the time of filming, it just blows my mind. Their acting was out of this world and especially at their age at the time. Those serious moments... and those sad af crying scenes. They completed it perfectly.
Now, the music is another thing. IT WAS PERFECT. It went along with the story nicely. There was not one piece that I heard during any episode that I thought something other than 'this music is nice and it fits well with this scene'. It added to the effect of what was happening in the story and even the closing episode music was sad enough to hear, to get me close to tears again. I recommend hearing the music, definitely. Watching the drama along with the music will make it sadder though, for sure.
I may re-watch this drama sometime in the future but I may need some time to recover from everything that I just watched. I recommend this drama to everyone, but just be prepared for the sadness. I didn't cry as much as most people did, I believe, but there were maybe three times I did. It is the most I have cried in any drama of any kind. BTW, I do hold my tears well.
I must say R.I.P to Aya... and thank her for her wonderful diary writing, for sharing her thoughts and feelings. She must've been a wonderful young woman.

The only Drama that literally made me cry like a little girl

This is the best heartbreaking drama I have ever seen, but it's an inspiration too.
Which is why, its my favourite heartbreaking Drama of all time!

This literally made me shed tears non-stop, As a man... I can't even explain it!
But tears were made, and I did try holding them back to the best of my ability.
The story is based on a True Story of a girl named Aya Kita whom wrote
a diary of her struggles with her disease. This is a special story.
It made me realise about being grateful for this human life.
There are others less fortunate than us, we shouldnt't take this for granted.
And we should help those who are less fortunate and be compassionate.

The OST is so beautiful, especially the song March 9th/Sangatsu Kokonoka.
I simply adore this song!

*Hitomi wo tojireba anata ga (If I close my eyes)
Mabuta no ura ni iru koto de (You're behind my eyelids)
Dore hodo tsuyoku nareta deshou (How strong has that made me?)
Anata ni toote watashi mo sou de aritai (I hope I'm the same for you)

The rewatch value is low, like others have mentioned.
It's tough to go through this again.
But it's a beautiful story that must be watched at least once.

This is a must watch for anyone interested in J-Dramas.

1 Litre of tears is an obviously heart-breaking drama, that's even based on a true story. This makes the viewer feel the pain of the main charater -Aya- and her family, her friends and the boy that eventually falls in love with her. The drama shares a quite optimistic but yet realistic view of life, when it comes to hard situations. However, some scenes are a bit too dramatic in my opinion. Also, the opinios shared about life and death may not appeal to everyone.

As far as acting is concerned, Sawajiri Erika and Nishikido Ryo were quite convincing. The same goes for the other actors. However for me Jinnai Takanori's acting was overdramatic. Narumi Riko was quite amateurish, too.

The soundtrack was beautiful, although you can't help but notice that a couple of songs and music themes are repeated too many times during the drama.

Generally, 1 litre of tears is a worth watching drama, especially if you love romance or tragedy. The character development is interesting and the story can touch anybody. Nevertheless, I can't overlook the fact that I felt that an important question was left unanswered in the end.

I've watched this drama three times and am finally ready to write a review for it. I find that a lot of Japanese dramas do tend to throw in the whole disease/illness plot but it really is and feels different when you know the drama is based on a true story.

The first time I watched this, I cried so much and even looking back on this drama now I still get teary-eyed . Before watching this , I actually never got emotional when watching ANY drama but after 1 Litre of tears I think I became more sensitive.

This drama is the kind where you know how the ending will be but still you watch it even though you know you're just giving yourself a lot of heartbreak. For me, this drama wasn't simply about a 15 year old girl suffering from an incurable disease but more of how she tries to fight against this disease and again this isn't a new plot in the case of J-dramas BUT because its based on a true story, it really does feel different. Maybe because while i was watching this drama i kept on remembering this fact and it really dawned on me how exceptional Aya was because she was a real person fighting against a terminal illness with such strength and optimism. She wasn't portrayed as being super-human and so there were moments where you did see her optimism waning and her struggle.

Another highlight of this drama was her family. They were supportive but of coarse they couldn't actually ease her suffering. A plus with 1 litre of tears is that its not that long, for that reason i marathoned this drama and have not forgotten it since. It really isn't a drama you can forget easily and more than that this drama really shows how important family is and friends. But also how when facing difficulties in our own lives we should try to remain positive and strong.

Any one who still hasn't tried this gem of a drama should definitely try it out. The storyline isn't complicated or long-winded but nor is it boring. The simplicity of it really brings out the emotions of the characters and with the OST (Konayuki) being played in the background, you'll lose a lot of tears but be able to watch an amazing drama.

This has always been an all-time favorite of mine. The execution was realistic enough to make me shed more than just a litre of tears. The story developed as naturally as one sleeps and wakes.

I guess I liked it so much because it was somewhat relatable to me. And I think it gave me such a valuable perspective back when I was younger.

The story and execution left such a huge imprint on me that even without actually re-watching it, I could remember almost every scene.

This drama is a must watch! I was hooked from the start and it was a different type of drama from the dramas I had been watching during that time. Seeing all the good reviews and good scores I decided to give it a try. I absolutely loved it. It was breathtakingly good. I cried time and time again, watching Aya come to terms with her disease and how everyone reacted to it. You won't regret watching it!

i really liked it.
i finished the drama in less than 24 hours and cried my eyes out for more than half of the series...

the whole cast was absolutely amazing and the story was really beautiful.
the characters blended beautifully and all the reactions and actions felt real...

if you're ready for crying more than a litre of tears and gut wretching heartache...then you're ready for this...

I love this drama!

The important thing is that it´s based on a real life story and we know this terrible disease, and in turn, see how a girl made ??the decision to move forward with your life ... simply an example to follow!

So... for me, 1 liter of tears is small compared to the tears that you can spill...is emotional, sentimental, but beautiful!

In addition to the excellent cast is amazing

The music is central to the development of the story.

I have seen 3 times and each time I like more than the previous

This movie was considered as one of the most interesting and inspiring drama to watch..This must see!...since this was based on a true story
--> some of my perspectives in life changed when i saw this ..It's not being dramatic but it's true!
I also observed the minimal usage of music especially in crying or sad scenes which made me realized that the acting/cast was made perfect! All in all it's great!

This was my second Japanese drama that I've ever watched and it's my favorite one. I have to say that I finished it in 1 day! The first episodes were a bit boring and not really sad at all but I kept watching. I don't even know when I cried the first time because I cried so much. I'm a person that cries over everything but I can't remember that I ever cried this much in my lifetime. I don't think there's a thing that I disliked (except the classmates lol) because I loved it so much! I just couldn't stop watching so I watched straight for 11 hours every single episode. This drama touched me so deep, even when I started to think about it I had to cry again.
So my final word is: This is one of the best drama's ever produced!

The story of line of the drama is so sad, especially since it is based on a true story. The plot overall is good, but I was a little ticked off at the male lead the last one or two episodes (It would be a spoiler if I told you what happens).

The acting is amazing for all parties, but especailly the female lead -her portrayal of the disease progression was so convincing and heartbreaking to watch.

The music from what I can remember was fine and not to repetitive, so I left its score blank.

I will definately rewatch this drama again and I highly recommend at least watching this once.
