Besides the fact that both films have the same male lead, their stories and cinematography are also remarkably similar. They are both experimental, ironic, and punk-ish takes on violence and crime.

Both movies are essentially about two stubborn guys who must learn a life-lesson while being stuck in a confined place. The Pool is definitely an action-thriller (since the stakes of survival are higher) while the plot of What Happened to Mr. Cha is more heavy on the comedy but, in storylines, the focus is on the mental development of the characters.

Both shows are miniseries depicting campus life/romance and their challenges. Both series feature a male lead that struggles with self acceptance and insecurity but wants to be popular. Although Blueming is LGBTQ+ focused (whereas At a Distance, Spring is Green is a bromance) both stories are realistic and have the typical coming-of-age plot.

Both are independent movies with metaphor-ridden, surrealist plot lines. Albeit in different ways, both stories showcase a wide range of social issues in modern-day society, packaged in unique and occasionally quirky symbolism.

Both movies are slow-burn and atmospheric stories about female office workers who are unsatisfied about their current lives and dream of escaping the confines of their mundane and dull routines. Not only are both movies excellent at conveying a sense of melancholy, depression, and loneliness through cinematography and dialogue (rather than through grand plot developments), they also show the real gendered experience (and misogyny) of corporate culture.

Both shows are short, episodic dramas where magical realism meets real life. The stories are centered around a young woman, who finds herself lost and jaded by life, and who must learn not only how to navigate a (magical) world but also learn invaluable life lessons on the way. Over the span of a few episodes, we see how the main character is able to find her own confidence and purpose in her profession while helping others. Whereas these stories do not classify as romance dramas, they do not shy away from the theme either, and we are presented with just a tiny hint of romance at the end. Both shows are guaranteed to bring you to tears at least once, but they will most definitely also leave you warm and fuzzy because of their hopeful message. Only watch these if you're in for a positive feel-good plot.

Equally weird, comedic, and just plain perverted. Saitankyori wa Mawari Kudokute probably has more of a storyline than The Ultimate Masturation (I dare say the latter is actually kinda boring?) but both works are basically porn parading around as movies. In both cases you're left wondering: "What the actual flipping fuck did I just watch?"
