At the age of 28, I am new to this. Took me long enough.
As a Singaporean Chinese, I had spent my early childhood years watching a lot of TVB dramas and only Wuxia specific Chinese dramas that are shown on my local channels. As I come of age and content being more accessible online, I’ve stopped watching Asian dramas and focused mainly on American and British series that I thought had better concept, dialogue and humor in general. I dabbled in multiple genres in both movies and series.
With the incurrence of streaming sites and platforms such as Netflix, I went onto explore korean dramas which I got into mainly due to the amazing use of ost and romance themes. My first korean drama was ‘I Can Hear Your Voice’ played by the veteran actress Lee Bo Young that went onto fuel my passion in watching korean romantic dramas.
Subsequently, due to a work posting in Shanghai, I decided to watch more Cdramas to improve on my mandarin. There, I heard my colleagues discussing about the then released ‘Joy of Life’ and I decided to give it a go. It cleared my misconception of cdramas not able to have a strong dialogue that is both witty and humorous. Then on, I started to watch more cdramas more extensively and re-found my love for it, not just limited to wuxia cdrama that I watched as a kid.
I found my taste in cdrama more matured as I pay more attention to the details of the production, costumes, script, story lines and acting. I noticed how the romance in cdrama and other asian dramas differ greatly from the English dramas in terms of how romance is portrayed. I admit asian dramas romantic themes are more cringe worthy than the west counterparts but it touches the heart of a hopeless romantic like myself.
Then on, I decided to watch more ancient and republican period cdramas that have romance elements which make my heart flutter.
Additionally, I love how these dramas portrayed extreme adversity that the leads have to overcome which is very inspiring to my day to day life.
I am also delighted to have found this mydramalist site to explore other asian dramas which includes Thai, Japanese and taiwanese dramas that embodies different styles of how romance is being portrayed.
My ratings and reviews are for just for fun and subjected to my humble opinion which I hope can help introduce fellow hopeless romantics like myself find out about dramas that they have not already seen.
Till then, enjoy your drama journey till the end!
