I almost feel bad saying this because, despite the very cliched story (I mean this is based on a manga after all), I did enjoy it. Would I watch it again? Nope. Maybe the extra 15 minutes story added after each episode because those were fun.
As for the characters. I don't know why but the lead female, Sakura Nanase, irks me so much. To me she doesn't feel like a real character nor is she interesting. She is in every way a Mary Sue. Her faults are not really faults, everybody's lives seem to revolve around her, and her incompetence is often overlooked. The other characters give her way to much credit than she deserves and frankly in a real-life hospital, she would have been fired ages ago. It seems like her "quirks" were intentionally written to make her endearing. Endearing to some but not a fully fleshed-out character. She is a flat and boring character in every sense (or maybe that's how the actress plays her). Maybe if this character were given to a better-skilled actress, it would have been better. Which is sad because this show has a lot of really great female characters who are underused but have potential. Ruuyuko and Sakai are two good female characters that have so much to offer to their storylines. Ruuyuko is a woman who feels out of place in the world she is in so she turns to all forms of escapism. Sakai, the very capable nurse, is burdened by the shadow of her former nurse mother. I feel like these two female characters were much better than Sakura. As for the male characters, for what he's given with Satoh plays Dr. Tendo very well but his character suffers because his storylines revolve around Sakura. It's a shame that he doesn't get much but he still does it and gives the character a whole lot more depth. Satoh could lead a whole series as we've seen in The Emperor's Cook. Lastly, I liked the ensemble cast here. I'd love to learn more about the other nurses, doctors and side characters. Too bad most of it is focused on the lead female who is dull as a rock.
