Seven-year-old Sang-woo is left with his grandmother in a remote village while his mother looks for work. Born and raised in the city, Sang-woo quickly comes into conflict with his old-fashioned grandmother and his new rural surroundings.

The story is very moving: a grandmother is raising her little granddaughter alone, after her son died and her daughter in law ran away. They do seem very happy with each other, until the grandchild goes missing. Twelve years later, she comes back, after facing hardships in Seoul, and reunites with her grandmother that hadn't stopped looking for her.

It turns out to be a job posting for "encoffiner", a person who performs rites and rituals before placing the body into the coffin. A 'tainted' job in the eyes of the society, but he eventually develops pride and purpose in this profession.

The movie opens with Gengobe hunted in pitch black by hovering lanterns held by unseen persecutors. He enters a house and finds a scene of carnage and mayhem, the floor strewn with mutilated bodies, limbs, others hanging dead from the ceiling. I told you it only starts there.

“Burmese Heart” shows the aftermath of World War II for Japanese soldiers far from home. Before they learn that Japan has surrendered, foraging food is a problem. Mizushima (rank unspecified, played by Yasui Shoji) is a scout who can pass for Burmese and has mastered the Burmese harp. Disguised as a Buddhist monk, Mizushima makes his way to where his company is imprisoned. Along the way, he finds many more corpses. He buries one, but feels that his duty is to return to his own company.

By the same filmmaker. Director Kazuo Hara tells the tale of the eponymous Chika and four different relationships she has during the turbulent political climate of the 1970s. Four different actresses play the role of Chika in order to emphasise the different ways she is perceived by her husband, a teacher, a student and an aging gangster.

It's a fiction film but stil worthy. One woman's search to find the truth about her husband's death in World War II.
