Review of Hur June
This show explored the theme of what it meant to be a doctor. Is it a doctor's job to seek fame, earn money or is it the job of doctor to care for his patient regardless of whether he gained anything from it? Hur June was a good doctor who did not care for fame or money but who cared only for his patients. He was not always like this, though. Initially, he was a hooligan who smuggled and broke the law because he found no meaning in his life. Gradually, he changed to be a doctor who cared for his patient more than he cared for even his own well-being.
This show also explored the theme of what it meant to be the family of a poor doctor. The wife and mother and son of Hur June suffered often because Hur June was poor. They often did not have enough to eat and often had to suffer abuse from the rich because of their low status and poverty. Still, in spite of that they trusted in Hur Junr and willingly endured their sufferings because they believed in his cause.
This show explored the theme of standing up for oneself in the midst of class inequalities. Hur June began as a low status hooligan but chose to stand up for himself to progress through the social ladder and ended up an imperial doctor. He began low in status but eventually reached a high level of status, all the while keeping to his principles to be kind to the patients.
This show explored the theme of how a good person can transform the selfish people around him to be kinder. Iisuh koo initially was a cheat who cheated Hur June of his money but through his encounter with Hur June and getting to know Hur June, he became transformed and less selfish. He would at times even walked the extra mile for Hur June. Likewise, Weetae's selflessness when he took care of the patients impacted Hur June and transformed Hur June from a hooligan to a selfless doctor like Weetae.
One thing I like about this show is that it featured the triumph of good over evil. While Hur June might suffer initially because of his care for patients more than fame or wealth, he triumphed eventually over the more selfish doctors because his heart for those suffering was eventually appreciated by those around him. He also got to influence the selfish doctors and turned them from enemies to be his supporters. This is what I like most about the show. Everytime when Hur June triumphed over the evil forces around him, I felt good. I kept watching the scene when his sacrifice was appreciated by those around him.
Overall, I enjoyed this show very much.
