why, do you think you'd be any different?
this was not at all what i expected! it also seems that there is trend of me feeling compelled to write a review when i have that initial apprehension of watching a film/series but then am very pleasantly surprised!! boyfri3nds is also super accessible through lululala's yt channelok before anything else, i wanted to say was that the poster is so powerful. they casted this series really well! i was drawn to this because of jieun - i previously saw her in the best moment to quit your job and also in strangers from hell.
my hesitance to watch boyfri3nds came from the impression that the web series would be normalising/romanticising cheating. the relationship between lahee and the three guys was obv more than just 썸 (a push-and-pull, fling). but i was so curious to know how it would end, and boy was i glad i stuck it out because it ended up being a sort of commentary that wasn't SUPER profound but still made an impact on my overall experience.
the best character written was definitely lahee, mostly by virtue of the way the plot was written. meanwhile the guys were all pretty docile and unimaginably (unrealistically?) angelic. their actions and words were so cringey, but i guess it worked and they all pulled off their characters. one thing though is that considering we had (1) the playful younger guy, (2) the sweet and gentle boyfriend, and (3) the cold city guy director, i would've expected a bit more polarity across their characters, but they all ended up being really, really kind in a really, really similar way?
the music didn't have any major impressions on me while watching, they didn't really have a theme song. most of the bgm was pretty classic fluffy romance bgm.
i'd absolutely watch it again just to try and see if i could pick out any Clues that would've made the ending less of a shock!
overall a great watch if you want to watch something fluffy but with a bit more depth

they wanted to show how trivial decisions could potentially lead us on drastically different paths,, but also on the flip side, they entertained the concept that there are elements of fate in life,, and that although we choose route A or B, they could converge to give similar outcomes (i guess that's a bit of a consolation for those of us who experience mad fomo)

i'd been holding back from watching this for a while because from the description, it sounded like it would be an office drama and that 90% of it would be based on court and law jargon, but it really wasn't! i was pleasantly surprised and irresponsibly neglected some of my own obligations to blast through these 20 episodes.
i thought the characters were well-written and well-executed. ji changwook is ji changwook but nam jihyun (i think she's my fave actress atm!) and dongha really took the cake! i really enjoyed watching their performance. jihyun has a really great range and her acting was believable. dongha did an INCREDIBLE job portraying the villain and i'm really curious to see him in other roles.
the romance was a huge part of the story and that was ok! i felt that their relationship was written very well and most importantly, both adults were honest with themselves and each other, and also upfront if any issues cropped up. i am done with "i hurt you in order to not hurt you" and the denial and pining that is a systemic trope in kdrama. here, both jiwook and bonghee were really, really mature and great characters.
of course there are always aspects that could've seen improvement, but weighing up the things that had potential to be better vs the drama that was presented to us? i'm pretty damn happy!
