A Robot in the Orange Orchard: A Decent Chinese Remake of "I Am Not a Robot"

As a viewer familiar with the original Korean series "I Am Not a Robot," I approached the Chinese remake, "A Robot in the Orange Orchard," with moderate expectations. My primary motivation for diving into this adaptation was the lead actress, whom I had encountered and enjoyed in another series, "19th Floor."

In the initial episodes, I couldn't help but notice that the emotional depth and expressions fell short compared to the Korean original. However, considering the language and cultural differences, the decent ratings were understandable. While I was unfamiliar with most of the cast, including the male lead, there were commendable supporting actors who contributed to maintaining the comedy theme present in the original series.

One aspect that stood out as a positive was the retention of the comedic elements, although I must admit that the Korean version executed them better. Despite this, the Chinese remake still managed to hold its own and proved to be quite enjoyable.

However, the main issue I encountered with "A Robot in the Orange Orchard" was the stretched-out plot. Although I was aware that it was a 30-episode series compared to the shorter Korean version, the pacing felt sluggish at times. Towards the latter part of the series, particularly after the male lead discovers the female lead's true identity, the storyline dragged, resulting in moments of boredom.

In summary, "A Robot in the Orange Orchard" is a decent remake with likable aspects. While it may not surpass the original Korean series, it still manages to offer an enjoyable viewing experience, particularly for fans of the genre. Despite its flaws, it remains a commendable effort in adapting a beloved story for a different audience.
