I placed spoilers at the end of this review.

I normally don’t’ like time shift storylines, but this had an interesting story concept. It had a good message about being careful with your choices in life and don’t live your life on how others think you should live it. The series handled each character’s story very well. However, I do have some complaints about the end. See the potential spoiler alert at the bottom if you want more info. The actors did a great job with portraying their characters. The series also did a great job shifting between the past and present. That is not easy to do and could have made this series confusing.

******Potential Spoiler Alert******
The ending could have been better. The series makes it seem they all went their own separate ways. It would have been nice to see the group meet-up at the end of the series to confirm that they are all still friends. The storyline between Paul and Pipu was too weird for me and wish they went a different direction. I also wished that Paul had a happier ending.

Cutely bizarre which just became bizarre at the end.

I placed spoilers at the end of this review.

I enjoyed most of this series despite its flaws, but I am a pushover for supernatural storylines. That being said, you should probably skip this series if that does not interest you. This was an interesting and bizarrely cute series with some cool story ideas. The script was light, fluffy (most of the time), and quirky. Unfortunately, the implementation of the ideas was not the greatest at times. My main problem was the end of episode 11 and episode 12. This is when it just became bizarre. Some of the comedy aspect didn’t really hit the mark and there were sections/things that didn’t make sense. Although I liked it, the mystery/suspense aspect was not incorporated very well and seemed out of place. The overall story pacing was good, but there was a lot of wasted screentime. The acting is ok (not horrible or great) considering many of the actors were new.

Random Notes:

Maybe I enjoyed this because I already went into this with low expectations. I was not a fan of the screenwriter/director’s last series (I Will Knock You) which I dropped.

The subtitles are ok. Sometimes the lines get mixed up with the words of the song that is playing in the background which was confusing.

******Spoiler Alert******

I would have loved to see more of the ghost story element. You do see the girl ghost a few times, but nothing about her backstory.

My review for each section of this series is based on the following criteria:
- Did it add anything to the original series
- Was there either an absence, advance, or regression of character/couple development
- Was the story concept interesting
- Script quality

The script was ok and had some cute moments. However, it’s not that interesting and became tedious at times. The acting was good but this section didn’t have the same magical elements that both main series had. It also did not add any story, character, or couple development with both main couples.

Random Note:

This crossover concept is not cutting it for me. If they were going to do this, at least create a better script. I wished they stuck with the 2-episode per couple concept that was originally promoted. Yes, this section was kind of enjoyable but wished it had better story/couple development.

There was also a missed opportunity by not having Drake reprise his character from A Tale of Thousand Stars. It would have been funny to see Pat meet Rang and say “Hey, you look like someone I know.”

Identity Problem

I placed spoilers at the end of this review.

Overall, this was a very cute series. However, you will need to change your mind set before you start watching it because this series had an identity problem. It seems the marketing department and production team received two different memo’s and were not on the same page. It’s marketed as a BL series, but the script had more of a slice of life vibe involving an ensemble cast. There is a BL couple and storyline, but it’s incorporated with other random storylines. For the positive, the relationship development between Jane and Ryan was great and had a nice, even pace. I also liked how all the interns supported each other and formed a good friendly working relationship, well most of the time. The Ryan after Work sections at the end of each episode were cute and informative. Now for the negative, there were big sections that didn’t involve the two main characters which is one aspect that created the series identity problem. The other aspect is there is one storyline that seems completely out of place when you watch this with a BL series mind set. However, it does make senses if you watch this from a slice of life viewpoint. The quality of the script was also inconsistent. There were parts that were very good, but were mixed with long periods of boring scenes. The comedy was also not quite right and there were too many sound effects.

Random Note:

The ending was ok, but it has one story element that I’m getting sick of seeing wrapped up in another story element that I’ve always found annoying.

The scene location used for Judy and Ba-Mhee’s work area was also used in the series GAP (Work section that Mon was assigned to).

******Spoiler Alert******

The storyline with Tae and Ba-Mhee quickly became annoying.

Beside the fact it was poorly written, the storyline with Tae, Ba-Mhee, and Judy seemed very out of place in a BL series.

Not only do we get a study abroad component, it comes with a 5-year time jump. The study abroad concept has been around for a long time, but it seems to be very popular lately.

Another Surprise

I placed spoilers at the end of this review.

Warning: There is slight disconnect between the marketing and the actual content of this series. However, this was a good thing (for me at least). The official trailer and show description suggested this was going to be mostly a very light and fluffy romcom, but had a nice amount of drama too. That being said, this series had a more interesting storyline that I anticipated.

The positive: The script is not perfect, but it was entertaining and not too predictable. They did a good job explaining the past history of Yi and Diao’s friendship and family relationship. Although there is one to many storylines for an 8-episode series, they did a nice job layering them and didn’t leave any loose ends. The cast was great and did a great job with what they were given considering some of the flaws with the script. I also like how supportive Yi’s father was with Diao. Overall, the cinematography, special effects, and CGI was good.

The negative: The main problem was the story continuity from the previous series (Cutie Pie) involving how Diao lost his childhood memories. The new storyline was a little far-fetch, but at least it was interesting. Even though it was a drastic difference, this was only a minor problem for me. The script had a lot of comedy that seemed missed placed and not very funny. There was also the random introduction of side characters in the middle of episode 6. Although the product placement was subtle, it still became annoying at times.

Random Notes:

Once again, I was pleasantly surprised because I was not a fan of Yi and Diao’s storyline in Cutie Pie. I liked their backstory in this series. You don’t have to watch Cutie Pie before you see this. They did a great job at making this a standalone series.

Interesting that they were able to get the same child actors from Cutie Pie, but not the same dog.

I thought it was hilarious that the dog was dressed like Chucky from Child’s Play in episode 3.

******Spoiler Alert******

The consistence problem with how Diao lost his memory made Yi and Diao’s storyline in Cutie Pie make no sense.

I was worried that Yi’s only reason for faking his amnesia was to try and win Diao back and happy that it wasn’t. It was part of it, but it was not the main reason.

Need To See This Version

Disclaimer: This is an edited version of my original review I posted on the cut version of this series.

This series is not for you if you don’t like paranormal story lines with a side of sci-fi. If it is, you are in for a treat.

I love this series even with the bittersweet ending. It had a great original storyline and script. The cast did an awesome job with their characters. This had a great music and beautiful cinematograph. was great and the special effects were used very strategically. I liked how they incorporated several nods to Lovely Writer in some of the earlier episodes.

Random Note:

I strongly recommend watching this version if you have access to it. As I stated in my original review, the editing of the free cut version was horrible. They cut a lot of scenes which made some of the episodes disconnected and/or confusing. The cut version had many scenes missing that were needed to help the viewers fully understand and appreciate what is going on. They also cut scenes involving the backstories of the side characters.

One Suspenseful Ride

Warning: If you are looking for an average and fluffy BL storyline, this series is not for you.

Overall, this was an awesome series. Then again, I am a sucker for suspense filled paranormal storylines. I also loved this series because it was a paranormal/mystery drama first with underlining gay storylines incorporated into it. The script was excellent and had me immediately hooked by the first episode. This had so many twists and turns that will keep you guessing what’s going to happen next. However, I’m not a fan of how the series ended. All of the actors did an amazing job with portraying their characters. The cinematography and special effects were outstanding. They also did a great job using different screen formats to establish the changing time lines to reduce possible confusion.

Random Notes:
My only criticism is the ending was too ambiguous which left too many questions unanswered.

Don’t stop watching after the ending credits in episode 14 because there are additional scenes after it.

Although there are no standardized directions on giving it, the way Brother Anurak used the Rorschach inkblot test was very random.

I placed a potential spoiler at the end of this review.

This was an interesting, but slightly bizarre series. Overall, the script was not bad. It just felt a little underdeveloped and became dark at times (for me at least). I know this is going to be an unpopular opinion, but this is not really a BL series. However, this was not a problem for me. The main theme was how two individuals helped each other to come to terms with their past and look forward to the future.

******Potential Spoiler Alert******

Again, this is just my opinion. The only BL story element was there is a hint that one of Takashi’s classmates had a crush on him.

My main criticism is the ending was too ambiguous and a bit of a letdown.

The Curse of the Rambling Script

I placed spoilers at the end of this review.

This was an interesting series. The script was good, but not great. On the positive, the ending was very satisfying and left no loose ends. On the downside, the main story concept was not always clear and there were some weird components. Some sections felt rushed and introduced things without context at times. There were also some side storylines that were unnecessary. It felt like they needed filler material for a script that could have been a 12-episode series but needed it to be 16 instead. The actors did a great job with their characters. However, I was not a fan of Lee Hong Jo’s coworkers. They were very annoying during most of the series and I skip many of their scenes. I know this will be an unpopular opinion, but I did not see any on-screen romantic chemistry with the two main leads. See the spoiler alert at the end of this review if you want more information. This had beautiful cinematography and special effects.

Random Notes:

Overall, I enjoyed watch it. Although the script had some flaws, it was entertaining and had a great ending.

Why do I love seeing familiar locations used from other series? The bar used in many of the scenes was the same one used in the “Love with Flaws” series.

******Spoiler Alert******

I’m not a fan of love triangles, but the one in this series was well written. However, I still found myself rooting for Lee Hong Jo to end up with Kwon Jae Kyung instead of Jang Shin Yu even though I knew that would not happen. Jang Shin Yu and Lee Hong Jo looked cute together, but I was not seeing any romantic connection with them.

The romantic storyline with Gong Seo Gu and Ma Eun Young was cute but seemed out of place with the rest of the script.

The storyline with Jang Shin Yu’s parents also seemed out of place and was just weird.

- Did it add anything to the original series

- Was the story concept interesting
- Script quality

Did it add anything to the original storyline? No, but that was the point with this section. I have to admit I was nervous about the alternate universe concept, but it was done very well. They did a great job with altering the storyline just enough to keep it interesting but still mirror the original. It was also cool to see the character role reversals. Just like the original series, the actors did a good job considering that many of them are still new. It also had really great music. The only complaint was the dance scene in the first episode. While it was cute, it was very clear they did not get enough time to practice the choreography. The actors looked awkward and stiff during the entire scene.

Random Note:

It was brilliant to incorporated three couples from previous BL series (He's Coming to Me; Bad Buddy; A Tale of Thousand Stars) into the music video.

Was that a hint of a possible second session at the end? One can only hope.

A for Effort/C for Execution

I placed a spoiler alert at the end of this review.

This series was good, but it could have been a lot better. However, it was nice to watch a mature BL series that didn’t use the typical university set-up. The script was ok, but there are a few elements that don’t make sense. I have no medical training, but even I found the medical scenes very unrealistic. If they didn’t have the budget to do them correctly, they could have found a better way around it. I like the cast, but the acting was not the greatest at some points. As for production, the series does suffer from poor background music choices and bad editing.

Random Note: The English title is not grammatically correct. It should be Dear Doctor, I’m Coming for Souls.

******Potential Spoiler Alert******
The ending is bittersweet, but it makes sense considering the storyline. The time jumps in the last episode is the only editing in the series that was done correctly.

My main criticism is two characters sleep together when one is very drunk. It doesn’t matter who initiated it; this is not ok. The other character was sober and should have said no. It was also out of character for the other one to move forward with it.

Family and Personal Growth

Overall, this was a great series. The script was heartwarming and inspirational, but had some weak aspects to it. There were a few underdeveloped sections to the story, but this was only a minor thing for me. The main annoying sections for me involved the character Kaede because she was very unlikable in the first half of the series. However, this character changes by the 7th episode. I was tempted to drop this due to this character but continued because I was very invested in the mystery and family dynamics. This had a great cast which did an incredible job with their characters. This also had beautiful cinematograph and excellent editing.

Random Note:

The brief opening credits were awesome.

The main underline theme is the importance of communication. However, there were so many other little lessons incorporated into this series.

The established family bond between the two brothers and the bonding development between the other characters was great.

Stick with the series version!

I placed spoilers at the end of this review.

Again, it was bizarre that I had to wait over 1 ½ years to do a comparison review.

The series: This had a cute storyline. I like that the script was simple and not overly dramatical, but it may be too simple for some people. However, the script had some weak elements. On the positive, the cast did a great job with their characters. I enjoyed watching the development of the friendship group throughout the series. I also liked the additional scene that was added at the end of most of the episodes. It had inconsistent sound quality/volume throughout the series.

The movie: The main problem with the movie version is the editing. I know they probably had to cut scenes for timing purposes, but many of the cut scenes somehow made this cute, simple storyline bland. It didn’t affect the overall relationship development, but slightly effected the story progression. The cut scenes also added more context. By cutting one scene in the beginning, one of the scenes in the end made no sense. They did a decent job editing it into a cohesive movie. There were only a few times the editing was choppy. As to be expected, they cut out the opening credits and additional scenes from the end of the episodes.

Random Notes:

I strongly recommend watching the series version (on Viki if you can).

The movie’s English subtitles on GagaOOLala were not bad, but I prefer the ones with the series on Viki (I did not take points off for this).

******Spoiler Alert******

The kissing scenes were actually not that bad for a change. Yes, the actors still looked awkward but they at least showed some emotions.

I placed spoilers at the end of this review.

I love doing comparison reviews when a BL series is edited into a movie. It’s just bizarre I had to wait over 1 ½ years to do this one. What is even more bizarre is I had to use a VPN to watch the movie edit of a Viki original series on GagaOOLala. This is especially weird considering that Viki released three other Korean BL series (one of them also a Viki original) after this series which all were quickly edited into a movie within the same year of its release.

The movie/series: This had an interesting storyline. The script was simple but good. I love how they used Woo Jae’s web-based novel to mirror the main couple’s situation. This helped explained both main characters’ feelings. It had nice cinematograph but the flash back scenes in the beginning was a little confusing because it was not clearly marked. The acting was good with the usual exception often seen in Korean BL series/movies.

The movie: The movie has a different starting point because they edited out the opening credits and the first 2 minutes from the series beginning. Overall, the move version was ok. They did a great job editing it into a cohesive movie. However, they made a few poor editing choices with the scenes they cut out. I know this was probably done for timing purposes, but the storyline did not have the same pacing it had in the series. On a good note, it did not affect the relationship and story progression in anyway.

Random Notes:

I strongly recommend watching the series version (on Viki if you can) because the pacing had a nice, even flow to it. Another reason is the movie’s English subtitles on GagaOOLala were very bad (I did not take points off for this).

******Spoiler Alert******

Although it was a bit extreme, I get why Woo Jae left. However, I don’t fully understand why he showed such hostile anger towards Yeon Woo. Especially considering he is the one that left without telling Yeon Woo.

The usual exception of course were the kiss scenes. I don’t need the actors to suck each other’s faces off, but at least kiss with some emotions. if the actors are not willing to do a proper kissing scene, have them kiss each other on the check or them hugging. Again, not every BL series has to end with a big make-out/kiss session.

Various Levels of Mediocre

I am a little bias when it comes to movies with a paranormal aspect which is why I was hoping for something better. Overall, this movie was just ok. It had a great story concept, but the script was lacking in many ways. There were a few times that the script just skips random things that made it a little confusing. The main problem is the horror, comedy, and romance elements were not successfully done and became boring after a while. Because of this, I started to skip some sections towards the end. However, I did apricate the slight twist in the end. As for the positive, the cast was great. They really did the best with what they had to work with. I also enjoyed the music and the special effects were not that bad.

Random Notes:

The location for Joe's house was also used in the series “Bake Me Please” (Peace’s house), “Shadow” (Dan’s childhood home), “Sing Again” (Piano’s childhood home), “Mama Gogo” (Annie’s house), and in “21 Days Theory” (Q’s house). Once again, I acknowledge that I'm a nerd for this kind of stuff.
