Song Kang Ho a obtenu son diplôme à Kimhae High College et, sans suivre de formation d'acteur, rejoint une troupe de théâtre social et le domaine de l'improvisation. L'expérience dans sa carrière de théâtre lui permet d'enrichir ses qualités bien que sa première scène date de 1991 avec la pièce Dongseung. Il refuse d'abord toutes les propositions des producteurs et réalisateurs, puis finit par accepter un petit rôle dans Le Jour où le cochon est tombé dans le puits de Hong Sang-soo, en 1996.
Song Kang Ho a épousé Hwang Jang Sook en 1995 et ont eu deux enfants, Song Jun Pyong (né en 1997) et Song Ju Yeon.
