The Best of Melodramas

I'm not really big on melodramas, I prefer action/crime/fantasy with a side of romance. But every now and then, I get the craving for some drama.

Here's a list of melos I watch when I do, in order of preference. It includes Korean and Taiwanese dramas.

  • Something in the Rain

    1. Something in the Rain

    Korean Drama - 2018, 16 episodes

    8.0

This drama is more of a wannabe melo than a real melo, but that's a good thing. Really digged the maturity (and realism?) of the show, even though towards the end it kind of became incoherent. I've rewatched it a few times already. Definitely recommend!

  • Encounter

    2. Encounter

    Korean Drama - 2018, 16 episodes

    8.0

There might not be much chemistry between the leads of this drama, but the story is melo in a fresh, light way that still makes you emotional. Plus, it's one of the best productions I've seen. There's so much thought put into how the scenes are filmed, it's amazing!

  • One Spring Night

    3. One Spring Night

    Korean Drama - 2019, 32 episodes

    8.0

This is like Something in the Rain...but a bit worse. It's got the maturity, but the characters less likeable and more incoherent. The drama is definitely more melo than Something in the Rain too. Still, a good watch and an okay rewatch!

  • Mask

    4. Mask

    Korean Drama - 2015, 20 episodes

    7.5

Now we're getting into real, intense melo territory. I'm a sucker for doppelganger stories, so I was in for this one. I like the slow-burn romance, and the drama is predictable but still, so satisfying! This drama surprised me and became one of the melos with highest rewatch value!

  • That Winter, The Wind Blows

    5. That Winter, The Wind Blows

    Korean Drama - 2013, 16 episodes

    8.0

When I think melodrama, I think of this drama. It's just so.darn.dramatic haha Still, it's the dramatic that's entertaining to watch. The romance is okay, the leads are okay, the story is okay, so give it a try!

  • Marriage Contract

    6. Marriage Contract

    Korean Drama - 2016, 16 episodes

    7.0

This drama is not too melo, what makes it melo is the terminal illness trope. It's just really bittersweet, but in a good way. Even though it's not perfect, I've rewatched it twice already. It's a nice, heartwarming watch!

  • Cinderella's Sister

    7. Cinderella's Sister

    Korean Drama - 2010, 20 episodes

    7.0

I love the premise of  this show, of shifting the whole cinderella story so we get the stepsister's perspective. The characters are deep and the drama is real. It's a bit old and doesn't have a high rewatch value, but still, I love it!

  • Autumn's Concerto

    8. Autumn's Concerto

    Taiwanese Drama - 2009, 21 episodes

    7.5

I remember I was quite shocked by this drama, because I was used to watching fluffy Taiwanese shows and that was the first one deviating from the norm. The OST of this drama is priceless, and I liked the main leads, even though the plot was just okay.

  • Lie of a Lie

    9. Lie of a Lie

    Korean Drama - 2020, 16 episodes

    7.5

The premise of this show is weird and the romance isn't the best, but I don't know why, it was kind of fun to watch! I guess the melodrama was the kind of drama I dig!

  • The Innocent Man

    10. The Innocent Man

    Korean Drama - 2012, 20 episodes

    8.0

I have fond memories of this drama, though to be honest, I haven't rewatched it!
