Forum posts:
001. Forum Partial Quoting
Often times you will find yourself unable to quote someone's post on the forum when you click on the "Quote" button and you get a little red pop-up saying you're unable to quote a long post. Sometimes also instead of quoting the entire post you just want to quote a specific paragraph or sentence in a post, but clicking on the "Quote" button doesn't help.
❗️ Selecting the part you want to quote in the post will automatically bring up a new "Quote" button you can click on right above the selected part.
001. Adding External Links
"External Links" edit section is a section where you can insert links like official website, IMDb, TMDb, Trakt, TVDb, Weibo, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Movie.Naver websites.
❌ Is it not meant for streaming websites.
❌ Is it not meant for unofficial websites.
❌ It is not meant for trailers.
❌ It is not meant for random English sites.
❌ It is not meant for links from production houses, but only direct links to the title are allowed.
❗️When adding links, you don't need to add the full link in the field. Adding only the end part, the ID, in the url is enough. Otherwise the link won't work properly.
❗️Only in the "Website" and "Naver" field you can add the full link.
002. Co-production Country
When you reach the "Production Information" section after you click on "Edit this page" on any title on MDL, you will stumble upon three fields: Original Language, Production CountrieS, and Original Network. A very common misconception about this second field, Production Countries, is that 90% of users want to put the country where the title was produced. That's a big no-no.
❗️The primary production country is added at the beginning in the "Primary Details" section, right next to the native name of the title, in the field where it says "Country".
❗️If the title is produced by only one country, then you leave the "Production Countries" field EMPTY.
❗️If the title is produced by more than one country, then you add the primary country (i.e. Japan) and the other countries too. (i.e. Hong Kong, South Korea).
❗️Remember, 80% of the titles on MDL are not co-produced, so leave the "Production Countries" field EMPTY and you most likely won't make a mistake.
002. Missing iQiyi and Viu Links
When you go to "Services" section you will find the options to enter various links from various streaming sites where you can watch a certain title. The links and the website logos will always show up in the section "Where to Watch (x)" right above "Cast & Credits" section on any title page on MDL. However, there is one catch~!
❗️iQiyi and Viu links along with their little website logos, even when entered correctly and the submissions already accepted by the approval staff, won't show up in the "Where to Watch (x)" section on any title on MDL.
❗️ iQIYI (爱奇艺), iQIYI (International), VIU Indonesia, VIU Malaysia, VIU Philippines, VIU Singapore, and VIU Thailand WON'T show up in the "Where to Watch (x)" section on any title on MDL.
❗️The links will still always be readily accessible when you go to the "Services" section.
❗️The contribution points will still count for those links if your submission was accepted.
This is how the system is currently set up and can't be changed at the moment.
003. Adding Tag Explanations
There are couple of ways you can add a tag on MDL, but the best way to do it is through the "Edit this Page" option which is located in the top right corner next to the title name on any title page on MDL. After you click on that option, you locate the section "Genres" (not "Tags"; shocking).
Why you should do it there? So you don't get your submission rejected.
Why would you get a rejection? Because you haven't provided any source or explanation why you want to add or remove a certain tag/genre.
Why is it needed to explain or give a source for adding tags/genres? Count every possible title on MDL and think very carefully whether is it humanly possible for 5 people in total to have actually watched all those titles and know what goes in every title like the back of their hand. (:
❌ Don't add tags through the "(Vote or add tags)" > "Add Tag"
❌ Don't add tags by clicking on "Edit this page" > "Tags"
❗️Add tags through the "Edit this page" > "Genres"
❗️Genres and tags section are joined together, so by clicking on "Genres" section, you'll also reach the "Tags" section.
❗️Provide a source and/or explanation for each tag/genre you add in the notes box at the bottom of your submission.
❗️Remember, saying only "I watched it" doesn't tell us anything why exactly that tag should be added and why it's relevant for all other users who want to watch that title.
003. Announced vs. Not Yet Aired
When you go to "Primary Details", underneath the "Content Type" you will stumble upon the field STATUS. The status field is to there to give the future watchers of the title some kind of indication on what is currently going on with the title. Can you catch it on TV or some streaming site right this moment, or are you just going to put it on your planned and hopeful list for future watching, or perhaps, some good stories are just not meant to be so the title got cancelled and will unfortunately never see the light of day. There are many options to choose from, and the ones MDL currently has are
Announced, Unconfirmed, Not Yet Aired, Airing, Finished Airing, and Cancelled. Two of those seem to look the same, but none of the current options are really the same.
❗️ NOT YET AIRED status is ONLY used when there's a full release date (month-day-year).
❗️ ANNOUNCED status is ONLY used when there's NO release date at all. Month, day, and year are all unknown.
❗️ ANNOUNCED status is ALSO used when there's NO full release date. Year is known, but month and day are unknown. Or, year and month are known, but the day is unknown.
004. Relations: Prequels & Sequels
When adding relations to titles, a lot of times you wish to add and list all possible sequels and all possible prequels all on one title, and that is wrong. Sequels are titles that come right after the season you're currently watching, and prequels are titles that came right before the season you're currently watching.
❌ You don't need to list all prequels and sequels on every title.
❗️There can be only ONE prequel and ONE sequel attached to one title, not multiple ones.
❗️Prequels and sequels are added in chronological order, so Season 1 > Season 2 > Season 3, and so on.
