Hello, dear MDLers,

I'm back again with another article. =D

Ever since I started watching Asian movies and dramas, I got to watch plenty of movies mostly from Japan, Korea, China, etc. I like exploring different genres and things that are out of the ordinary. Therefore, I stumbled upon very weird movies (in my opinion) that turned out to be quite good and unique.

I will list five of those movies that I consider to be Weird Yet Good which I have seen till now.

Out of all the countries, I find Japan to be the only country that comes up with really weird and unique stories that stick with me for some reason, and I always find myself searching and wanting more so I will start my list with:

1. Yurigokoro (2017)

Country:

Japan

Summary:

Ryosuke’s father has been diagnosed with late-stage cancer. Ryosuke finds a diary in his father’s study. There is a note written by a murderer.  (MDL)

Cast:

                                  Yoshitaka Yuriko                                                                                                  Matsuzaka Tori

Matsuyama Kenichi

Opinion:

This is a really dark and twisted movie (I can say it's rated as 18+) that I'm sure is not meant for everyone, but it has this vibe to it that pulls you in immediately and keeps you engaged. The casting was great in my opinion, I am glad I got to know new actors and explore more of their work. If you do not mind these kinds of movies, go ahead and watch this gem.

 2. He Won't Kill, She Won't Die (2019)

Country:

Japan

Summary:

The drama revolves around the relationship between Rei Kosaka, a tsundere guy who easily gets worked up, and who always says "Just die already", and Nana Shikano, a girl who habitually cuts her wrists and who always says "I want to die". (MDL)

Cast:

                             Mamiya Shotaro                                                                                         Sakurai Hinako

Opinion:

I found this movie to be quite odd, even boring at times, but it turned out to be a really good movie that is still stuck with me. I can't seem to forget it.

4. Last Life In The Universe (2003)

Country:

Japan & Thailand

Summary:

A suicidal, obsessively-compulsive Japanese librarian is forced to lie low in Thailand with a pot-smoking woman coping with the recent loss of her sister.  (MDL)

Cast:

                                  Asano Tadanobu                                                                                    Noon Daran Boonyasak

Opinion:

This movie is rated as 18+, it's one of those indie kinds of movies, it's a very slow burn with minimal dialogue yet it was very... interesting and attractive in its own way. If you don't mind slow burn movies, go ahead and give it a try.

4. Blowfish (2011)

Country:

Taiwan

Summary:

A woman leaves her cheating boyfriend and goes to a remote village in the Taiwanese mountains to deliver a blowfish to a man who won it in an online auction. Immediately, a quiet and unusual relationship develops between the two.  (MDL)

Cast:

                                     Chris Wu                                                                                                           Angel Yao

Opinion:

This movie is rated as 18+ as well, I have seen Chris Wu in other roles but this one was different from his usual works that I watched and it was really nice. It's also a slow burn indie movie with very little dialogue, a pretty much silent movie?

5. Forget me not (2015)

Country:

Japan

Summary:

Takashi Hayama is a third-year high school student who falls in love with Azusa Oribe at first sight. They begin to date and one day, Azusa tells Takashi "people who meet me, forget about me several hours later." Takashi doesn't believe Azusa, but by chance, he realizes that it was true. To prevent that, Takashi begins to leave a note for himself and Azusa. (MDL)

Cast:

                                   Murakami Nijiro                                                                                        Hayami Akari

Opinion:

This is a unique story, I must say, the concept is weird, but it's the type of movie that makes you want to know the ending.

Bonus movie

Last Winter We Parted (2018), I will not write details on this movie as I am not sure if it's considered as "Weird" but it certainly is unique and different and I would recommend anyone to go ahead and watch it (cast, direction, and the story was all great).

Hope you enjoyed my article! =D

Let me know in the comments below if you have seen any of these movies, and what are Good Yet Weird movies that you have seen and recommend?

Until next time, MDLers.
