The Hero We Had VS The Hero We Deserved
To say that this year has been an eventful year would be an understatement. Luckily we had Netflix by our side through it all to help us escape from the real world through its content. The 2020 Pandemic left us with more time to dedicate to binging shows or exploring new genres we always meant to give a shot had we had the time. My favorite feature this year was the Netflix watch party where it partnered up with Google to allow you and your friends to watch something on the streaming site together.
On December 10th, through a press release, Netflix allowed us to see which of their content the world watched in 2020. Foreign language title viewing went up by 50% and more exciting is that this year Korean drama viewing tripled with top contenders being #1 Kingdom and #2 King: The Eternal Monarch. On the movie side #Alive ranked top 10 in 90 countries! While I am not surprised by the success of the Kingdom series as it has become a cult following phenomenon, it is still amazing to see it ranking so well on the list. King: The Eternal Monarch is certainly an underdog that did not shatter records domestically but found international success, and that is a big hurray to screenwriter Kim Eun Sook!
Ip Man 4: The Finale also did well overall ranking one spot above #Alive in the foreign language list, as first reported by the wall street journal in October 2020.
It is amazing to see the rise in popularity for Asian content, and I would like to point out that this list features Netflix original content, therefore movies like Parasite would be missing from the list. Congratulations to all the dramas and films that ranked this well. Here is to an even more successful 2021!
