Motola Serena & Nishijima Hidetoshi Starring in 'Kaze No Denwa / Phone Of The Wind'

Stills from the Japanese film Kaze no Denwa have been revealed. The film is scheduled to premiere sometime around Spring 2020.

Directed by Suwa Nobuhiro, the film will tell the story of 17-year-old Haru, whose family perished in the Great Tohoku Earthquake. Coping with grief and loss, Haru embarks on a trip from Hiroshima to her hometown in Otsuchi, Iwate Prefecture, seeking salvation for her wounded soul.

"Kaze no Denwa" (lit. The Phone of the Wind) in a garden at Otsuchi, Iwate Prefecture.

"Kaze no Denwa" was inspired by the true story of 72-year-old Sasaki Itaru, who put up a white telephone booth in the middle of his garden. Inside the telephone booth, he placed a notebook and a black disconnected rotary dial telephone which helped him "talk" to his departed cousin. Up to this day, the said phone booth still stands and is open to people who have come to convey their feelings to departed loved ones "through the wind".

On May 29th, 2016, NHK released a documentary titled "The Phone of the Wind: Whispers to Lost Families", an intimate look into what the people are really feeling five years after the disaster.
