RECAP: Gu Family Book ep 6

We start with a flashback of Lord Park questioning a child, Kang Chi, as to why he fought with his friends. Kang Chi admits that he is ashamed about being found in a river and hates when anyone talks about it. Lord Park says that he is glad that he found Kang Chi or he never would have met him, and that he considers Kang Chi his son. The scene of Lord Park dying in Kang Chi’s arms is played again, ending with Kang Chi angrily looking up at Satan with glowing green eyes.



Kang Chi jumps up and runs toward Gwan Woong, but is stopped by So Jung. Kang Chi’s bracelet glows and the wind gets more fierce. After it dies down, Kang Chi and Jo Sung have disappeared. Everyone is surprised by Kang Chi’s disappearance as Lord Park’s family reacts to his death. Lee Soon Shin hears of Lord Park’s death and the secret entrance to the money room is shown to be still uncovered.



Word spreads that Kang Chi has murdered Lord Park and wanted posters are put up around town. Lord Park’s body is loaded onto an ox-driven cart, but the ox refuses to move even when several soldiers attempt to push it. It isn’t until Lord Park’s wife and children lay their hands on the wrapped body and say that it’s okay to leave that the ox begins pulling the cart.



Yeo Wool is angry to learn that Kang Chi is being framed for Lord Park’s murder. There is a 200 yang bounty put on Kang Chi, and the townspeople are shocked at the news. Yeo Wool sets out to find Kang Chi despite Gon Yi’s protests saying that she owes Kang Chi her life.



Chung Jo, Lady Park and Tae Seo are being led to jail when they are stopped and told that Tae Seo is to be tortured. Lady Park protests, but Tae Seo reassures her that he will be fine as long as she’s alive. Lady Park and Chung Jo hear Tae Seo’s screams of pain causing Lady Park to become hysterical. Chung Jo tells her to calm down and tries to cover her ears, but Lady Park collapses.



Kang Chi wakes up in the ‘love cave’ (in the very spot where he was conceived and birthed). He walks out and encounters So Jung. He ask about his family and, receiving no answer, begins to leave. So Jung says there is nothing he can do about it--what already happened has happened and to just forget about it. He then (basically) blames Kang Chi for Lord Park’s death and tells him to stay, because it was his mother’s last wish. This stops Kang Chi and he learns that So Jung knew both his mother and father.



Tae Seo is shown beaten and bloody as Satan approaches him and tells him that it’s his fault that his father died. Tae Seo screams that he will get revenge for his father and kill him.



Gwan Woong questions a soldier about Kang Chi, but there is no trace of him. Satan says that Kang Chi’s glowing eyes bothered him greatly. The soldier states that he believes that the bracelet gives Kang Chi power (um no but go ahead and take it off just to check). Gwan Woong wants Kang Chi brought to him alive. The sheriff then comes in and says that Tae Seo is not revealing anything and is unsure how to proceed. Gwan Woong says that the son should be killed, the wife sold as slave and the daughter turned into a state gisaeng. The 100 Year Inn should be sold--to him, of course.



Tae Seo is brought to the jail cell in a terrible state. He asks about Kang Chi, and the others believe that he ran away to protect himself. Yeo Wol and Gon Yi decide that Kang Chi must be in the mountains and go to look for him. Wal Pae and one his men follow them, hoping to catch Kang Chi and get the reward. They begin to argue and suddenly Gon Yi appears beside them. Wal Pae offers him part of the reward money, but he tells them to leave or else.



Yeo Wool runs in the direction of a soldier only to encounter several more. She runs away and is pulled beside a large rock. She fights her attacker only to discover it is Kang Chi. He pulls her down as the soldiers approach and vines magically grow to hide their legs from view. Yeo Wool asks him if he’s been hiding there all night. He answers that she looks quite pretty if you look closely but a stranger may believe she is a boy (um am I missing something, I had no idea that Kang Chi didn’t know she was female). She tells him that everyone is looking for him and that there is a bounty on his head. Gon Yi then pulls Kang Chi up and punches him in the face. Yeo Wool breaks up the fight and tells Kang Chi that his family is in jail being tortured.



We get a flashback of the rest of Kang Chi’s conversation with So Jung. So Jung says that his parents had reasons for abandoning him and that he needs to stay put according to his destiny. Kang Chi says that he has a family to save and leaves.



Kang Chi returns to the 100 Year Inn and encounters one of the servants who tells him that all the people that work there have been locked in for days (that explains why Kang Chi is being so easily framed). Kang Chi leaves to go rescue his family from jail when the servant tell him that Lord Park’s death wasn’t his fault (aww, he really needed to hear that).



At the jail, Chung Jo is taken from the cell and told that their fates have been determined--Tae Seo will be executed in the morning, Lady Park will become a state slave and she will become a state gisaeng. Chung Jo demands a proper trial and actual evidence of her father’s crimes to be brought forth. Tae Seo questions how one letter can destroy an entire family and the guard replies that those in power control the law. Chung Jo is taken away as Tae Seo yells for her before passing out.



Chung So is locked in a jail cart, and the guard leaves to use the bathroom. Chung Jo calls out for Kang Chi to save her and suddenly his hand closes over hers. He attempts to get her out, but she stops him and tells him that he needs to save her brother first, because he is to be executed tomorrow. Kang Chi relents and tells her that he’ll come back for her. She grabs his sleeve as he’s leaving and he turns and kisses her on the forehead.



Kang Chi knocks out the guards and makes his way into the jail. He opens the door to the men’s cell and discovers an unconscious Tae Seo. One of his Lord Park’s guards says that he has to get help soon or he’ll get an infection. Kang Chi then opens the women’s cell and attempts to get Lady Park out, but she refuses saying that she will only slow them down.




Kang Chi and the other men leave the jail with Tae Seo but Satan’s minions appear and block their path. They begin to fight, but Lord Park’s head guard tells Kang Chi to leave and take care of Tae Seo. He is wounded and says he has some things to take care of personally. Gwan Woong’s men chase Kang Chi and he barely evades them.  The thief that Lord Park helped out earlier appears and offers them a place to hide. One of Satan’s minions attacks but is shot with an arrow by Yeo Wool. She tells the man to hide Tae Seo for a few days and then she tells Kang Chi that they need to create a distraction.



Yeo Wool and Kang Chi lead the soldiers into the woods and then split up. Kang Chi gets surrounded and one of the soldiers slices his bracelet (oh no, big mistake buddy). A strong gust of wind appears and the skies grow darker. The soldiers began slicing Kang Chi and he falls to the ground. He tells himself that he has to go rescue Chung Jo, but his body hurts and feels like it’s on fire.



Yeo Wool sees that he is in danger and starts toward him only to be stopped by the blue lights. More and more appear around Kang Chi as his eyes glow and he begins to transform. His wounds heal and he stands up, fully transformed into his gumiho side, shocking the soldiers and Yeo Wool.

I was shocked that Kang Chi transformed so early, I wasn’t expecting it until at least ep 10. I’m curious to see yeo Wool’s reaction to his transformation.  I agree with Laura that he could have just let Chung Jo  out then and told her to hide. I know that I bring this up constantly but this episode was an excellent example of Kang Chi’s chemistry with Chung Jo and lack of it with Wool-if your faces are inches apart and I don’t feel anything then that’s a big problem.

Wow. Kang Chi is finally letting out his gumiho side now that the bracelet is gone.  I hope Yeo Wool took seeing it pretty well. It looked like she might have been a bit shocked/horrified at the unexpected turn of events but hopefully she won’t run away in fear. What will Chung Jo’s reaction be? The same as Seo Hwa’s? Probably if Yeo Wool is ever going to have a chance with Kang Chi.  Things are definitely moving along faster now.  Storylines have been set up and even if Kang Chi isn’t looking for the gu family book yet I am sure Tae Seo and him  will at least be looking to plot revenge soon. Maybe it’s just me but I thought that was a really bad wanted poster for Choi Kang Chi. Things would also probably have been easier if Kang Chi had just freed Chung Jo and told her to run into the woods when he had the chance.
