Amazing combination of horror, comedy and romance
Watched this in 2020, after falling in love with Gong Hyo Jin in It's Okay Thats Love, and proceeded to watch all the drama she has been in.As a disclaimer, I am not someone who loves the horror genre, as I am a scaredy cat. So it took a lot ouf of me to start watching the Master's Sun, especially after I saw the trailer for it. I'm glad I did, this show stands firm as one of my favorite shows, and has made me proclaim the Hong Sisters as one of the top writers in SK right now.
The Hong Sister's mastery of the fantasy elements has resonated across the different dramas they have written. Although not all their dramas have been great, like Big for example, they have hit enough home runs that they are given a pass for some of their poorer dramas. They Hong Sisters, formulaic style revolves around the heavy usages of metaphors, symbolism, and a slow burning romances. And for Master Sun, I would not have it any other way. This kind of slow burning romance, unconciously makes us more attentive to every micro emotions showed, every tear shed, and every loving embrace, intensifying the love of the couple in the latter episodes. Now on to the review.
The ghost genre has been done multiple times before in the past, but in this reviewers honest opinion, this may be the best and funniest portrayal of it. The basic premise of the show portrays GHJ character as a women who can see ghost and is deathly afraid of them, and SJS's character as a man who can make the ghost disappear. What then follows is a Ghost of the Day type of storytelling that chronicles the adventure of our two leads. Each episode not only comes with a beautiful ministory within the plot, but serves to move the plot along. These mini stories also does a great job of building up each character, complete with flaws and strengths.
It is very satisfying to see the growth of both characters as we accompany them on their many "Ghostbuster" like escapades. By ep 17, you will rejoice, and cry tears of joy when you see how far both of these character travels. And like with most Kdrama there will be many hindrances in the way; but the way the couple deals with them, and the micro emotions that they allow to momentarily seep out is so endearing and romantic. In a lot of ways, I would comment that the journey is almost as good as the destination itself.
I also especially liked the use of symbolism and metaphors by the Hong Sisters here, who used parellel stories of Candy and The Goat and the Wolf. In fact these stories will serve as the central theme for the show. The stories of candy and the goat and wolf serve as a backdrop the main couples emotional struggle. And your vieweing experience is actually increased dramatically if you just took a quick look at the synopsis of both of these books to help you understand the hidden emotions that the character are feeling, although GHJ and SJS does an excellent job of pushing those emotions thru carefully guarded words and facade.
The acting of both leads are amazing, and the chemistry is electrifying. In fact as some commenters have suggested, a quick watch on youtube of the behind the scenes antics of the two main leads will have you shipping them in real life. GHJ is at one of her best here, she is absolutely, adorable here, even more adorable than in Pasta, and her acting is on another level here, I won't spoil much, you will just have to see.
SJS, one of the king of melo, shows his comedic chops here, and it is fantastic. SJS really portrays these brooding, rich type very well. And since we are so used seeing him in these type of roles, it becomes very refreshing to see him in a role where he doesn't take himself seriously. The scenes where he tells GHJ to get lost are comedy gold, because even us as viewers can't take him seriously, so we know GHJ probably doesn't either. The supporting cast in this are great, they really elevate and compliment the main leads. The writers do a great job of giving them their own backstory, and even their own romance.
The music... I have it on my playlist and hear it probably 3-4 times a day, it's that good!
Anyway, I would definitely recommend at least 1 rewatch of this, as the heavy usage of metaphor in the earlier scenes become more clear when you've watched the whole episode. Watch this show, you will not regret!

The acting was really good though, I really like Joo Joong Won hand move of saying "get lost" to Tae Gong Shil, I even did it many times with him when he was saying it to Tea Yang lol. Gong Hye Jin acting was fantastic, really really love her acting, So Ji Sub though is the comedian one to me, his way of talking to Tae Yang makes me laugh.
There's so many things to talk about in this drama, but the main point is that they extracted the end in the last two episodes, I was slightly bored in the middle of the drama, but it didn't last long, however these two episodes were really boring to me, so many unnecessary things were added I mean there weren't many main things that happened they could've just put it in one episode, seriously?!!
THE MUSIC IS SOOOOOOO GOOOOOOODDDDD, so good so good so good, it was immediately added to my favorite list.
Overall it really deserves a 9 but then the ending wasn't that great, and also I don't think I'll watch it again, it's enjoyable for the first time. but I don't think it will be for the second.

Overall, I highly recommend this drama. It worked great for me. It will now be placed in my top 5 dramas.
If I may be arrogant enough to hope that if you read this review in the future, while wondering which drama to watch next, this will convince you to watch "The Master's Sun". I'm certain you'll be entertained and perhaps fall in love with these characters as much as I did. Enjoy!

Story: One word - TYPICAL. Rich man meets poor woman, rich man treats poor woman badly, rich man in denial he fell for poor woman, rich man realised he fell for poor woman, then he loses his memory, gained it back and the poor woman has to leave one episode towards the end just to prove to the audience that she has backbone and can live independently; only to be reunited when she comes back from being away, with the man and voila! you get your happy ending.Throw in an average of one ghost per episode (there are more ghosts in the first few episodes but the number drops down to one per episode as the drama progresses), a second male lead who does not get the poor girl but ended up with the bitchy rich girl who was eyeing the male lead first and you get Master's Sun.
Did I give away spoilers? Nope. You cannot consider standard storyline as spoilers.
Suffice to say; there's nothing in the storyline to get excited about.
Acting/Cast: Seasoned actors and actresses. I find no fault with acting except that I do find the female lead's performance quite like her performance in "The Greatest Love". Even the chemistry between her and the male lead was similar. The ghosts in the first few episodes were scary. You get them jumping out at you at various times but as a seasoned horror movie viewer, I kind of know when they are coming; so was well prepared for it.
Music: Nice music but nothing to get excited about. Suitable for the mood of the drama.
Rewatch value: Not in a hurry to rewatch this one.
Overall: Passable entertainment for those of you who are bored out of your mind but not a stellar piece of work. This is not a drama that sits at the top of your list if you have other better ones to go to. Expect all the usual KDrama characteristics.

Although the effects are kinda stupid sometimes overrated
But this drama is worth re-watching.

Story: I feel the story was fresh. I never seen a drama with a storyline like this so that was good. I really like how each episode there were different case where Tae Yang had to help them. In each episode, you get to learn about the character and their past. There is a lot more than what the summary is saying so you will have to see it for yourself and find out.
Acting: I feel like the main cast and the supporting cast did a good job. The female and male had a good chemistry! I really hated the antagonist and normally I don't hate them that much, but in this one I really hated her.
Music: I liked all the OST, but my favorite was my Hyorin from Sistar. That songs sum up Tae Yang and Joo Won relationship.
Rewatch: I would probably rewatch it, but not a for a while because then it will lost it meaning. So that why I rated a 9.
Overall: I really enjoyed the story and everything that was happening. It is a Rom Com so be warn that it is a funny drama and horror. Be warn that this drama will make you laugh, cry and cry.

I wasn’t swept away by Master’s Sun but it still has redeeming qualities worthy of giving it 3 Kiss Marks. One of the things notable in the drama is its character development. Joong Won and Gong Shil went through substantial changes as the story progress. Joong Won’s transformation is exceptional. It was fun seeing him change from a cold-hearted, calculating business man to a warm, in love and occasionally weird guy. The Hong Sisters did a marvelous job in leaving no character undeveloped.
The cast also delivered a superb acting. I was so amazed with So Ji Sub. He acted Joo Joong Won so well, I’m speechless. Gong Hyo Jin was amusing every time another spirit comes into Tae Gong Shil. The drama doesn’t have a strong conflict. The villains are subdued; they didn’t really create ruckus which I kind of liked because most of the time I want to kill them or I want to pull my hair out because they’re overpowering the lead characters. The ghosts aren’t really that scary. It was the build up that actually made them effective. The soundtrack is lovely.
Overall, it’s a drama you’ll easily love and enjoy. It would only depend on what you are looking for in a drama for you to truly appreciate it. I may not have liked it the way I expect it to be but I would gladly recommend this because it was well made. The Hong Sisters are known in creating epic romances, Master’s Sun is one of them.

I'm no fan of ghost stories and such (I hate horror stuff), but this series had high ratings and I only heard good stuff about it so I thought why not?
Sometimes moving and touching, then lighthearted and even funny at times, the drama manages to keep the viewer interested for almost all of its episodes. (I got to admit that I was scared by the ghosts at first but the meh-ish special effects mixed with the fact that the drama slowly drafted away from the whole "horror" thing... well. It almost became fun to see them.)
I liked the idea of having a ghost story for each episode in the first part of the series but then, as a Hong sisters drama, it had to live up to its expectations and there goes some melodrama. It didn't go too far, but it all felt so unnecessary to me that I just can't give the drama a 9 or even a 10.
The two main characters/actors had such a great chemistry I couldn't help but love the main couple. Even though I don't know if it's because of So Ji Sub's hair and his whole divaness or just the fact Gong Hyo Jin was there (or both), but they reminded me of The Greatest Love. Anyways... their acting was A+.
Sadly, the other characters had literally no purpose of being there. None of them really brought anything to the story, they were just... there. Likeable (and pleasant to watch, hi there Seo In Guk), yes, but really useless.
Something else also bugged me. The sometimes unnecessary complex dialogues filled with metaphors. Now I know it's like a Hong sisters trademark but this need to be deep comes off as trying too hard and it has to stop.
The OST was great in itself but I felt like it didn't match the drama. The piano instrumentals were greatly used though.
I don't think I would watch it again, because even though the drama is great overall, there is not really any memorable scene or moment that would make me watch it all over again.
I really liked The Master's Sun thanks to the great acting, its amazing main characters and a steady quality for almost all of its 17 episodes. Sadly the series has its flaws and a lot of unnecessary stuff added to them.
(first review, sorry it was so badly written)

That said, I didn't hate a single character, and I was supporting many pairings! How nice is that? To have a drama, where there isn't an evil stepmom or a jealous ex, waiting to swoop in and create un-necessary drama. For once, everyone was quite accepting of each others choices (with a few hiccups) and that was lovely to see.
Special mention to Chief Kang Woo and Tae Yi Ryung, very sweet side dish I must say.
For me ep 2, 9 and 10 were the weakest and ep 12 was the strongest. A big draw for me was the mystery of Cha Hee Joo/Hanna and that's what kept me watching for a while.
In the beginning, I felt the chemistry between Joong Won and Tae Yang was just right, but then for a few episodes I felt the romance was more of a very good friendship and I was finding it hard to connect to So Ji Sub's real emotion. The kisses were trademark Hong-style too. Wide eyes, arms by the side etc etc.
However by the end, I realised I was going to miss all the characters all the same, and although the saccharine lines were a bit much to swallow towards the end, I appreciated everyone's hard work and I reached the finale!!!
This drama is well worth the watch. Most likely drama of 2013, lol, though I haven't watched any other releases of 2013 yet. I don't give praise away lightly, so this drama has something going for it.
Enjoy watching everybody else. It will be a treat of epic proportions.

This show, at many points, made me laugh so hard, then made me cry sadly. I appreciate that the romance was revved up very quickly - very typical of Hong Sister shows. What I really love about this show is the personal growth of the characters - Joong Won, Gong Shil and Yi Ryung. Their growth and development is very satisfying to watch onscreen.
One pairing I really grew to love is Kang Won and Yi Ryung. Female second leads still suffer from being painted with a broad brush as being bitchy and jealous, while male second leads are always written as being very well-meaning nice guys who just never get the girl. Yi Ryung definitely won me over by the end of the drama.
Gong Hyo Jin, as expected, acted the heck out of Gong Shil, and has great chemistry with So Ji Sub - as she has had with just about every male actor she has acted with. I was also looking forward to seeing how So Ji Sub, the quintessential brooding man, would be transformed into a comedy star, the way Cha Seung Won was transformed through Best Love. I think his transformation is quite successful!
Some side storylines were somewhat wasted or were badly written and acted, i.e. I didn't have much interest in those characters and just wanted to know, so what happened to them?, but the overall show won me over.
