My Day is exactly what we need right now

My Day is an interesting BL because it came during the time where regardless of where you live in the world, the Pandemic had totally made things tougher and challenging. I'm giving this series a Full 10 stars because it's amazing what they had done considering the fact that most Philippine BL series that was launched during this time all have video conferencing themes, while My Day goes for a full cinematic BL series that we're all used to seeing in most Thai productions. With the lockdowns in place, sometimes you have to think about how the actors and the production were able to navigate through all these challenges just to bring the story to life. The OST is one of the best BL OST that we're ever produced, its up there with the OST from Tharn Type, Waterboyy, 2gether and Sotus. It has that happy good vibes feel that we all need particularly given the fact that we're all going through the Pandemic. Let's start with the cinematography. It's perfect, and it's beautiful. The actors are perfect for their roles. There's a chemistry between Miko and Aki. You can see it on their body language and in their eyes. Of course the rich boy poor boy theme is always interesting. But this series is also about family, and that's something that will be interesting to see on how the drama develops in future episodes. I do wanna point out that it's important to watch the trailer because it's one of those amazing perfect trailers that kinda give you the look of the show, and yet it gives you all those reasons to be hooked to it. One of the most controversial role is Jelai, he plays Ace's assistant. He can be too much and over the top but there are many instances that Jelai is really funny. I think that role is important because Jelai delivers the light funny break that the scenes needs. Another character that I think was acted really well is Moira, she's the girlfriend of Sky. She's very moody and bossy, and that kinda reminded everyone that this is a BL movie, you will be rooting for Sky and Ace. I love how she gave life to that role. All in all, this is a must watch BL. And I think My Day sets the standards on how a Philippine BL should look like. My Day can definitely compete with 2gether, 2Moons, Sotus, Tharn Type and Together with Me.

Not so bad for a Pinoy BL

My comments are merely subjective so chill out if ya dont agree.

Only watched this show because a lot of people were going crazy about it.

There’s no question about the chemistry the two main leads have but honestly, sometimes they’re just trying so hard to become great actors that they ended up making some good lines too cringey to hear.

Ace’s character development was completely shitty. I didnt even realise that they were already confessing to each other’s feelings. I mean yeah he hawt asf but where’s the damn chase phase at yo! That’s the whole gist of a bl series. They also need a support role tho.

Also, Moira’s character is just purely below the belt. I know they’re somewhat of a successful actor /actress if their role is the antagonist and the viewers get pissed at them but Moira’s character was just too disrespectful, unnecessary, and just plain bad. What im getting at is that the writers were trying so hard to make us hate her character.

What I like about the show is their OST. Hindi Ako Bibitaw always saves the show whenever it’s played. I don’t care how much awkward the episode is, but when it plays, uggh my heart just melts.

The Bisaya dialect. Chukchuk and friends. The number of gay characters they put in the show. These all just goes to show that they’re trying to inject a “let’s be different from other bl series we usually see” vibe. I liked it.

Overall, it was not my bl cup of tea but for a pioneering Filipino bl, I guess it’s not so bad.

Decide yourself

So here I am cracking my fingers because this will be the lengthiest review I have ever done so far on Dramalist and that's saying a lot. Whilst you might think it would be a positively driven one being the lengthiest its because the series gave a funny headache.

Where to start. The series is not bad and it's not good either. For the whole night I stayed up to watch it, my brain cells kept getting confused as to whether to die-out or freeze over. The story or plots are a disaster, however, it's a beautiful disaster once you can get past seeing Bakka's and other beauty product advertisements within the series each time because they portray as a normal scene and I am wondering what happened only for me to see the bag carryon bag and i am like here we go again. You could also try getting past Miss Becky, the Mary Poppins or should I say Fairy godmother wanna be, another going past would be Moira.... jeez I could kill that girl. at least in #TogetherWithMe Plernpleng was pretty and very crafty and calculative with her devious plans, but Moira here, should probably not have been in the show. I wanted her dead from ep1, then try getting past the unrealistic scenes (which for me if I was watching Korean or Chinese fantasies I would be fine with), but hey this ain't one of those so its annoying that Moira and dumber try to dognap and conveniently the guard to Ace's mansion (which is practically like a palace and should have better security systems by the way or more than one guard), is sleeping and the strong sliding gate is open. I mean where does that actually happen that he leaves the gate open in the middle of the night and dozes off as if expecting the nappers, what I smelt there were the girls not being able of course to jump the high gate so the script had to leave it open for them. Yet I come back to the fact that whilst want can weirdly try to appreciate that Ace sees his dogs more like children, but what's with the dognapping to get revenge.

Moving on, on things to get past is Shy's dad, he was practically in a mind limbo for most of the series and was wondering if there was any need to have included him in the first place. You probably would also need to get past Aki's acting of Ace, his expressions were borderline puke worthy because they were not necessary, you know that expression "crying more than the bereaved"? he was the king. Very dramatic when rushing Sky to the hospital for his allergy. I think his acting skills with regards to that needs more improvement. Then let's visit another thing getting past. Sky's drunken state, both times in the earlier part of the series he was drunk, not only did Ace become overly dramatic but also Sky's brother Ken and his mum at some point I felt they were treating his drunken state like he had malaria and were fawning over him in ridiculous ways.

But you know what amidst the weird scenarios and poor acting I did enjoy a few things:
1. the chemistry between Sky and Ace, both as friends and as boyfriends
2. the steamy hot scenes of course
3. for some weird reason I loved Sky's brother Ken and Sky's mum they made the family time worth looking forward to. Sky's mum is just a bundle of awesomeness
4. I loved Jelai's interactions with jam even though some might say its borderline harassment it was cute

So whilst at every episode, I kept questioning why I was watching it and kept face palming myself for stressing my brain cells, I still enjoyed it in a silly way. The plots honestly could have been better. Welcome ep8 Ace invites Sky to join him for a client meeting (meanwhile anytime they go for client meetings Sky is always on casual wears), but this time he wears a suit, gets to the venue sees a dreamy set-up and does not ask questions, Ace reaches out his hands he takes it and then they spend some dumb minutes chatting and feeding themselves and I was like "hello"... because even if yes Sky likes Ace, i would still have expected him to have asked where is the client and whats with this set-up guess what he asks after they were done with their playing and feeding. So really I don't know what to say. One puke worthy moment i will not forget that probably would have landed me in the hospital since i was on the treadmill while watching was episode 10 Ace's birthday scene from when Sky talked till the end of their dance. The dance scene was reminiscent of a cinderella setting with a superman ost feel and a room full of Fujoshies. the scene made me dry heave to the point i bent my head down forgetting i was on a treadmill.

Worst still for me is that this is a 2020 series I expected more from the actors and the plots, but then again i have practically watched all Thai, China, Japanese and Korean BLs and just came across this. Again like i said okay to watch for the first time won't probably watch another time and if you are going to watch, try getting a bandaid for your brain cells and also sun shades if you can spare to block out some scenes. Otherwise enjoy

Kinda strange to watch for me

Overall it's a nice show, but I'm missing something. Most of the characters' acting is kind of exaggerated. It's kind of strange to me to see it. In my opinion the scenes are too long. I think some scenes weren't important and they were just a filler.
I have nothing against boys of female character, but the acting is strange to me.
The story is okay, but it's kind of agony for me to see the series. However, I wanted to get through the show and watched the ending. The music is also used too often.
I think the chemistry between the main characters is very good. I'm glad I finished the series, but I wouldn't see or recommend it. Sorry for my bad grammar.?

UPDATE: Not the worst ever - I should not have overreacted

NOTE: After many months of watching one horrible, low-budget BL after another, I now look back on my reaction to 'My Day' and realize I overreacted. In retrospect it doesn't deserve the rating I originally gave it, which was '1.0's across the board.

I've thought about rewriting the review but part of me thinks that would be a cop-out, like I'm trying to avoid my mistake. So I'll leave the writing intact but raise the score.

'My Day' is not a masterpiece by any means, but wow, I had no idea what the future had in store. Mea culpa!

--------

'My Day' is the BL series that asks: How badly do you want to watch two straight men pretend to be in a relationship?

Be careful how you answer, because watching this series might make your eyes bleed.

'My Day' is more than a disaster -- it's a sign of the BL Apocalypse. It's the result of BL fans blindly throwing their support behind anything that calls itself BL.

This series is so blissfully terrible that the only explanation I have for it is that it's a cash-grab exploitation ploy. No time or effort was put into anything related to the production except for product placements and the superficialities that might draw viewers to it for the first time -- things such as the attractiveness of the main leads and some of the costumes and set design. To me the rest is meant to just take the money and run.

In the world of commerce, anything that becomes popular will result in imitators who seek to profit by making fake versions of the original. As my MDL username implies, one of my hobbies is collecting sneakers, and in the sneaker world this is something that happens constantly. There's a whole underground industry of black-marketeers who quickly manufacture 'replicas' of popular shoes and cash in by selling them at a fraction of what the real thing would cost. At first glance these replicas seem authentic, but upon close inspection you realize that the materials are shoddy, the colors are off, and the construction is terrible.

'My Day' strikes me as the first replica of a BL series. Nothing about it feels authentic or sincere.

The acting is abysmal. It's as though every scene was filmed with one take. As I watched the initial episodes I wondered if the cast had done any kind of workshopping where they could delve into the personae of their characters, understanding their motivations, hopes, fears, and life history. Because in 'My Day', instead of characterizations what we get is people 'behaving' in order to create new 'situations' at the whim of the writers. Instead of a coherent plot we get a mad dash to throw as many BL tropes at the screen as possible. From one episode to the next -- or even from scene to scene -- characters are deployed indifferently, exhibiting behaviors that have no relation to what they were like in earlier scenes.

For example, when we're first introduced to Sky we learn that he's a top culinary student whose hard work has led to a much-coveted internship at a famous bakery. Sky stands proudly among his classmates as he's recognized for his accomplishments, exuding the kind of maturity that we'd expect from a top student. But then, just a few scenes later on his first day of the internship, when the president of the company -- Ace, a notoriously demanding and ill-tempered CEO -- is meeting the new hires for the first time, we see Sky sitting just a few feet away, indifferently checking his phone and paying zero attention to what Ace is saying.

This of course leads the two into a tense confrontation, but as a viewer you're left puzzled. Is this really how a top student would act? In that same scene just moments before, the employees had adamantly warned the new hires about how terrifying Ace can be when he's angry, but the screenwriters are so eager to engineer a confrontation between Ace and Sky that they resort to a completely unbelievable scenario for it to happen.

Later on, after Sky has done more than enough to get himself thrown out of the internship, he goes to Ace's office to beg for one more chance. What does the script have him do? Well, just that, of course, and nothing else: beg. "Please, Mr. Ace ... please, please!"

And that's it! (Someone give that writer an award!)

Never mind that Sky's appeal for mercy could have included something about himself or his family that might have an impact on Ace, making it the first time that an employee has stirred him in a way that makes him take notice and want to forgive. No, because that might have required some actual creativity.

Nevertheless, despite the lack of imagination in Sky's appeal, Ace does decide to give him another chance, because in the lamebrain world of 'My Day' a character will act completely contrary to their reputation without any explanation. Everything is at the service of the screenwriters as they hurry to shuffle us from one drama trope to the next.

I know there are plenty of series that people will say have had worse acting, worse writing, or worse production design than 'My Day', and, based on some of the comments here and on Twitter and YouTube I know there are people who actually think this steaming pile is a masterpiece.

What those other 'bad' series have that 'My Day' lacks is a sincere attempt to bring a consistent narrative to the screen. Despite the challenges (and a likely lack of budget) they strive to deliver an engaging story. The cast actually rehearses, and you can sense that they're really trying to create characters who have a motivation for everything they do.

It's a sad day for BL when hucksters can perpetrate a fraud like 'My Day' on a trusting fandom, and even sadder when the fans feed the monster by proudly celebrating it. We only get the kind of BL that we deserve, and if we insist on rewarding a dumpster fire like 'My Day' then I promise we'll only get more of the same, and we'll have only ourselves to blame.

As it happens, earlier this week, as I wondered 'What series could possibly be worse than this one?', I inadvertently found my answer on YouTube when I stumbled on an announcement that there will be a 'My Day: Season Two'.

Yes, the people behind this hot mess are going to give themselves a chance to outdo themselves....

May the BL gods have mercy on our souls.

I don't have words...

Once upon a time there was a director with some good ideas who wanted to build something out of it. Unfortunately, he only had a big bulldozer to do this. What does it matter! He drove it happily!

I don't really have the words to describe My Day. A mix of Disney series and B series. I don't know, I don't know anymore.
Just that I have never laughed so much in front of a BL, often at his exepense. I often wonder how on purpose the campy and the cringy were. There came a moment of no return in the nullity that it became good. I got hooked.

I could write pages and pages about the ackward moments, the non-logical sequences, the scenes out of nowhere, the failed scenes, the useless scenes, the microphones, the technicians visible ... So much.

BUT I also saw actors who had fun, incredible chemistry, some good moments, good characters, dogs, and rainbow and fireworks and escaping swimsuit and pink underwear ... It was also LGBTQ-lly uninhibited and refreshing.

My Day has his own world.
Perfectionist and cranky, refrain. If not, take a deep breath of glitters and go.

Quality Pinoy Bl series

Worth it to watch, the cinematography, the story is very unique, good acting ? Bet na bet kuyong pagiging mataray ni Ace and uts very convincing. Kaya kung ako sa inyo panoorin niyo itong series na ito dahil im sure kikiligin kayo and at tge same time may lesson kayong matutunan.

Really well made series! (No spoilers)

This series is really well made! Despite it being produced during quarantine, It has a lot of potential and its production value wasn't compromised. The OST is one of the most original I've ever heard, a factor i greatly consider when watching a series, and is one of the major selling points of this production!

The actors have really great chemistry, and the cinematography is like something out of a disney film! Each character is fleshed out and unique from one another. It's great to see Filipinos expanding towards BL. The plot isn't your basic wattpad story. I 100% recommend this, and kudos to the actors and Oxin films for a great production.

P.s.: idk what dropping a title is, but i'm assuming it means 'are you recommending this to other people'. If thats the case then yes i do recommend this series!

You're better off pretending it doesn't exist

I'm just baffled by how bad it is. I mean I was willing to put up with it at the start. Like it was cute how campy it was but there was SO much filler. Like could they not have been more concise about setting up Ace of Cakes' situation regarding it's position in the market? Did it really have to be that long, with pointless chatter? Did we really need AN ENTIRE scene where the maid serves food to the dogs? Do we need that blatant ad placements? At least with Thai media it wasn't as bad. For the love of god, at least have some focus in your writing. If this was an ADHD allegory, it would be a masterpiece.

At pucha naman, who wrote the episode where Chukchuk went missing? You'd at least expect that since the "main character" (whomever that may be since there is SO MUCH disconnect with what's happening that it becomes loose) would work hard, maybe even pray that Chukchuk would come back so that he wouldn't get fired. Maybe if they set it up properly, about how important the job is (which they did, but Sky just ends up neglecting it anyway, despite having a hard-working background - the antithesis to Ace, who was born into a rich family), and how important it is to satisfy Ace, he could have been portrayed as being more invested in finding him. And then, when the sun starts to set, and the gang starts to lose hope, Sky makes a last desperate attempt at searching for Chukchuk, maybe with some internal monologue or whatever about how his life is over, but he keeps going. No luck. He breaks down on the ground and closes his eyes. He might even start to cry. Suddenly, Chukchuk appears right in front of him. HE'S the one that finds him. BUT YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENED INSTEAD? SOME RANDOS FIND HIM, JUST SO THEY CAN ADVERTISE ANG PUTANG INANG G-CASH SPONSORSHIP NILA. GAGO.
But back to my re-imagined scene, Sky comes back to the house by himself to return Chukchuk. He admits he messed up, and tells Ace that he understands if he wants to fire him. Ace notices how dirty Sky's uniform has become from searching all day. He shows his good side, and allows him to continue working for him, albeit in a stern, kind of tsundere way. But he's just glad that his dog is back, because he's like family to him (if they had set that up in the first place), and he's impressed that Sky cared that much about his dog, even though he, and the maid were the only ones that do.

And oh god don't get me started with the camera-work. They made it looks so fantastical in the trailer but it ended up being shallow as hell. It's like when I learned fancy tricks on photoshop but had NO idea how to execute them right. I'd just apply it to every situation even if it didn't really fit, just because I couldn't think of anything else. It's amateur. At least naman with the lower budget series, they don't need cheap tricks. They know what they're doing. I'm not even going to blame any of the talent because I'm almost 100% sure it's the director's call almost all the time, and they were probably told to do all that. It was just managed so poorly. Which sucks because really the only thing we're missing in pinoy gay dramas is the typical rich-and-spoiled/poor-and-hardworking trope that's centred around businesses and adulthood. Yes we've had rich/poor couples like Vlad x Karl, Barry x Mando, and Rocky x Judah, but not in the same way I'm talking about because that part of their identity isn't really considered to that extent.

Lastly, for the love of god, how many times do we have to hear that the main characters are gwapo? YES. WE GET IT. WE CAN SEE IT. I know that's part of Filipino culture to value good looks but MY GOD WE DON'T BRING IT UP THAT MUCH.

AND LASTLY AGAIN FOR LAST, MY BIGGEST PET PEEVE. Why, oh, why, are queer characters always just there for comedic relief? Why are they always ugly? Pretty much every bakla I've met, besides me (but I'm already handsome no matter what I do so :3 jokes), cares about their looks. Why is Jelai and Sky's brother not allowed to look good? (Seriously though Sky's brother isn't even ugly but they're making him as ugly as possible for some reason by making his hair and wardrobe choices weird). It pisses me off because it's such an old fashioned trope that only made it okay for other people to make fun of gays in public, because that's what they're portrayed as. As clowns. We're not clowns, okay? We all have our own stories to tell. So don't just fill up your characters/cast with them just to compensate for the fact that you've made a trainwreck of a show.

That's all I'll say. Just don't even bother giving it a chance.
