Yet another terrible Netflix kdrama (HEAVY SPOILERS)

I disliked the first season but decided to watch the second one hoping it will be slightly better (just like, in my opinion, My First First Love). I honestly don't know what was I thinking.

I will start with an arguably best thing about the drama, namely its setting. I am not exaggerating when I say that the concept behind the drama is fantastic. Social media addiction has entered a new level due to a Love Alarm – an app, which rings every time someone who has a crush on you gets close to your phone. However, soon after its creation, the app becomes troublesome to many. The idea of finding true love is now turning into yet another social media competition for likes. Couples no longer trust each other, and people are overwhelmed with loneliness, which leads to new class divisions, protests and mass suicides. The antiutopian world the drama shows is incredibly thought-provoking. Sadly, as it usually happens, what could have been a great story was ruined by poor screenwriting.

The plot seems a bit complicated, but if you think about it, it's just yet another modern version of Cinderella but with a typical second male lead love story and a slight twist in the end. The ML, Sunoh, is a spoiled child of a politician and an actress who are literal sociopaths. The FL, Jojo, is an orphan who lives with her aunt and cousin, working numerous shifts to pay her dead parents' debt. The main characters attend the same high school, fall in love, and everyone is mad at them for numerous reasons. So, pressured by Sunoh's family, Jojo decides to break up. To do so, she installs a shield for her Love Alarm app, so she can lie that her feelings have changed, yada yada yada.

Now, in season 2, we are in college years. Jojo is now dating a second male lead, Hyeyoung, who was best friends with the ML and had a crush on the FL throughout the first season. By accident, the big trio reconnects, and it turns out that – surprise surprise – Sunoh is still in love with Jojo. But because Jojo's Love Alarm still has a shield on, we don't really know who Jojo loves. So now Jojo not only has to make a choice, but she also has to come clean about this whole lying-about-her-feelings thing. And then she does and chooses Hyeyoung. That's it. That's the story.

I don't even know where to start. First of all, the characters - literally everyone has a personality of a rock. I'm aware that the drama was probably meant to show how the love confessing app would change the way people express their feelings, but for the love of God, not a single one of the characters is able to resolve anything humanely. It's incredible how the FL had not one, not two, but three boyfriends throughout the drama and yet showed no signs of charisma or empathy. Even the tragic backstory doesn't help her case – she is one of the blandest characters I have ever seen in a kdrama. Moreover, she hides the truth from everyone and has literally no good reason to do so? For most of the series, she refuses to explain the ML why she was forced to end their relationship, even though this big secret has no relevance anymore and only causes further problems. Similarly, she has no reason to not tell the SL why her Love Alarm does not ring for him. Jojo is the one full of lies and yet somehow manages to make it all about herself, as she wasn't the most problematic one.

To tell you the truth, the ML and the SL are as unlikeable as the FL. Their only personality trait is being obsessed with Jojo. And let me remind you once again. For Sunoh, Jojo is a high school girlfriend who was with him for a month or two four years ago. And for Hyeyoung, Jojo is a girlfriend who doesn't love him back, cheats on him and basically treats him like a doormat. Besides that, I would maybe have some sympathy for ML and SL if not the fact that they are literal stalkers who do not take "no" for an answer. Out of everyone, the only character I felt bad for was the ML's girlfriend, Yuju (because yes, the ML is so loveable that in season 2 he had a girlfriend he didn't even like). It's ridiculous how the screenwriters attempted to portray her as vain and silly when she was, in fact, the most caring and, in a way, expressive character out of all. I'm sad she had to end up with that jerk.

Secondly, the plot. This story could have been an email. The whole drama it's the good old circle of miscommunication. Almost all of the problems would not have happened or could have been resolved by talking. I hate it how the characters could not talk it out even when given the perfect opportunity. Moreover, the screenwriters ran out of ideas at some point, and it shows. The drama had some really interesting subplots. One of them revolved around Love Alarm's original creator, Dukgoo, who programmed the app in order to confess to his crush, Jojo's cousin Gulmi. Dukgoo's story was quite complicated and linked to many crucial events in the drama. He created the app, sent Jojo mods and even had a link to protests and suicides caused by Love Alarm. As I mentioned before, this futuristic theme was way more interesting than the love story, and thus the subplot had a great potential to develop in the second season. However, it seems like the screenwriters just gave up on it, giving Dukgoo an illogical ending that doesn't explain a thing.

Overall, I would not recommend watching Love Alarm. It's one of the top positions of my "how the hell did I even get through all of the episodes" list. The plot is boring, and the characters are even worse. And if you like the idea of technology messing up with people's feelings, then go watch Black Mirror instead.

DOesnt make sense at all.

Its too rushed. And also i think the story might not be making sense due to the first season. Sun Oh and Kim JoJo were still in love at the end of season 1. And i thought it might be continueing where the last episode ended. I think the first season was better. Maybe it should have ended like everyone wanted it to be. And why would she be with hye yeong if she still loves Sun Oh, but cant ring his love alarm because of the barrier or "Shield". In other words, I wouldnt recommend the second season of love alarm but the first one. Maybe they should think about doing Love Alarm once again, but with only one Season but 16 Episodes or something like that

2 YEARS OF WAITING FOR SEASON 2 WAS NOT WORTH IT.

this has been anticipated for two damn years, two damn years. it's different for me because i watched this at the start of quarantine, in march, and here I am, one damn year later, so for me it was one year of anticipation, compared to others.

AND IT WAS NOT WORTH IT.

look, don't watch this, if you loved season one, don't watch this. season 2 literally took every scene, every moment, every smile and every laugh for granted and literally destroyed the value of season 1

and even if you're not team sunho, don't watch this, if i were sunho or hyeong hee, i'd fucking dump her ass. i dont fucking get what is it with her that entices both of them.

side character plot development was TRASH.

season 1, editing, production, aesthetic, scriptwriting and overall feel and vibe was so beautiful and so much more memorable, no matter how cheesy, IT WAS so much more better. this felt over exposed, the music was ringing in my ear and everything from the first 10 minutes turned me off.

i would have rather waited fifty more years, until my fucking death bed and die of curiosity than watch this.

it felt like nothing was happening, nothing was progressing despite the story moving forward,

and personally, the sideplots was honestly dumb, like this show was trying to be so many things at once; thriller, mystery, romance, tragedy, sad, etc.

only thing i liked, the editing is great, everyone's acting was great except the actor for brain cho (piss off mate) and SONG KANG, fuck sunho deserves the world. his character honestly was SO ROBBED. when you thought he was destroyed, he was fucking crushed, and when he was already crushed, he was torn to pieces, AND WHEN HE TRIED TO PICK THEM UP TOGETHER, TO FUCKING HOLD ON, his entire character, his entire being, who he is, what he is, what he believed in snapped.

i honestly don't understand Jojo and heung hee, their relationship didn't satisfy me, it didn't felt... to be yearned for, it didn't feel worth it, it felt like two mismatched pieces trying to piece together, but no matter how many times you try to squish them together, they wouldn't fit

FUCK YOU JOJO, for not only the heartache you caused to sunho, but just... just how you treated heung hee. stupidest heroine i've watched. both of these boys deserved better.

A DISAPPOINTMENT! Don’t watch it!

I have never wrote a review before but this time I had to because I was BEYOND DISAPPOINTED!!!! THERE’S A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A BAD AND A SAD ENDING! I have always respected sad endings from kdramas but this is very bad. The people behind this drama never respected the fans’ votes and opinions who waited for two years for seasons 2. They were all good actors but Kim So-Hyun(jojo) and Jung Ga-Ram(Hye-young) didn’t have any chemistry at all. Even the shortest screen time of So-Hyun and Song Kang (Sun-O) had better chemistry. I can’t believe I waited for two years for this ending. The story doesn’t even deserve a 0.5.

Disappointed, bored and angry - Don’t watch season 2

Waited so long for the second season and now i feel cheated. Angry at the character development and the plot. Disappointed that she ended up with HyeYeong and the whole shield and spear thing. The whole season 2 is about SunOh being whiny, forced chemistry between Jojo and HyeYeong and Jojo being a heartless, indecisive b****. The last episode is produced solely to justify Jojo’s behaviour for being a b**** for the whole of season 2. It makes me hate Jojo. The whole feel of season 2 is depressing and unatural (forced). I skipped a bit here and there because it was boring, fed up with the excuses, anticlimactic drama and forced chemistry.. Not too sure if I skipped too much but the only mouth to mouth kiss in season 2 is between Sunoh and Jojo. LIke honestly how can they expect us to root for the newly established couple with that sort of script?? There is no continuity from season 1 to season 2. All of the feels, excitement and chemistry of Sunoh and Jojo was flushed down the toilet and season 2 is drowning in moppy, unnecessary, anticlimactic drama.

Pros:
English Dub
Gulmi’s parts are more interesting.

Not your typical plot

I kind of liked the story plot, it just wasn’t to my taste. I feel like it’s a very compelling show I guess not the ending or way I would have liked it to go. I was hoping I didn’t wait such a long time to see that ending 😩 in the first season I was in love with how the story went and the love between sun oh and Kim jojo, I hadn’t expect such a big change in plot or to go another way. The plot could have dealt more in this second season with their overall relationship rather than try to sum it all up at once and then move on. Or even that they made a better ending for park before she deserved it. I do think it’s a very reasonable story line and it would make sense, I was just hoping for a fairy tale ending.

I can't believe they made us wait two years for a sequel that was so bland and boring.

I can't believe they made us wait two years for a sequel that was so bland and boring. The dialogue felt forced a lot of the time, and while there were cheesy scenes on season 1, season 2 was... something else... The scene on the canteen made me cringe so hard.
I'll be honest, I'm not a fan of the 3 characters. Hye Young is boring and his personality is basically "I like Jojo". Jo Jo is supposed to be more of an adult and focuses so much on that app when having hurt her ex s.o's feelings and her own shoul've made her already realize that she doesn't have to rely on an app. The scenes between Hye Young and Jo Jo bored me to death. Sun Oh never learned that he should stop screaming and throwing tantrums, even though I guess I can give him a pass because I, too, would be frustrated by not understanding why Jo Jo acted the way she did in their past and now.

???2 years waiting for this?!

If two years ago me could tell me to drop this drama, I would!!!
Don’t. Just don’t. I was so disappointed.... It just so annoying! It doesn’t resolve itself like it should. Ughhhhhh. I can’t believe she didn’t consider Su-oh’s feelings. Blatantly inconsiderate! This is making me so upset ☹️ It could have been done much better. I think the whole story arc is lame. After so long, it could have been done so much better! Ext time I might not wait years to finish a drama! Better things to see albeit the actors are pretty good

( • ө • )♡ I loved it. The final Couple was my Favourite (´∩。• ᵕ •。∩`) ♡.

I love all the leads to be honest, and I often found that HJ was always more mature than both JJ and SO, He just never knew how to be as honest about his feeling like SO. SO is such an interesting character in general, because he was always so honest about how he felt abut JJ and HY, so it was heart breaking to see his his pain in season 1. ( • ө • )♡

Season 2 was so much better than season 1 as it kept me utterly hooked, and the growth each and every character including JJ's cousin and Aunt, had was beautiful. Season 2 also showed the major wounds both HY and So had due to their families and it was so beautifully portrayed. I almost cried when I found out the reason why HY always smiled in the mirror.
Now lets talk about the secondary plot lines. T be honest, they were not all that interesting, I barely even remember anything to do with JJ's friend. Also, the creepy stalker's story was just plain weird. However my favourite side story was that showing the cousins growth, because I think the writer kept her full of flaws and didn't water down her personality like they do to many feisty female characters in dramas. She grew enough to understand JJ and not bully her, while also caring about her mom's life as well, which was sweet.

Back to the Main couple. I was very happy with the ending as both characters helped each other grow and was their for support, and at the end I can't say anyone was lonely. My favourite side character was definitely Duk gu, he is genuinely such a sweet heart and I also loved Gul Mi too . ʕ •ᴥ•ʔ

Not THAT bad

The bad reviews about this drama is about, and ONLY about, the endgame of it. I just know it. People are mad the girl didn’t end up with the guy they expected her to do...

We need to talk about it. Seeing the comments in this section, it just feels like Hyeyeong is a bad villain or did something so horrible that he didn’t deserve her, actually he deserves her the most (in my opinion). I’m obviously team Hyeyeong & I’m really satisfied with the ending, we need to realize how the writer did a revolution for this drama, letting the female lead not ending up with the first male lead is not easy & the proof of it are the bad reviews this season is getting.

Love Alarm is a famous drama & when I knew that the second male lead got the girl, I was honestly shocked, I didn’t expect it to happen even if I hoped for it. I have major second male leads syndrome, I had it in a lot of dramas like True Beauty, Start Up or School 2015... I didn’t expect for the man I was rooting for to be the endgame in this drama, it was so obvious for me that Sunoh would get her.

Basically, I’m just saying that Jojo & Sunoh not ending together isn’t a big deal. They were dating in their highschool days but time passes, guys... We are not always sticking on our first love for life. Yes, our first love will always be memorable but first love doesn’t mean the last. The characters are happy now & it’s the essential thing, Jojo & Sunoh have to move on anyway.

Hyeyeong & Yukjo are good characters and I think that people should STOP being so dramatic over a SHOW & fictional characters.

Talking about dramatic people, some Sunoh stans should stop judging Hyeyeong’s character by the actor’s looks. They’re both really pretty & talented, please stop & grow up.

I wanted jojo and sun-oh to end together, waited for season 2 for more than a year and got this ending, its my first time writing a review for any drama,i love k-drama there were many dramas in which i was a bit sad when my favourite couple did not end together but this was the worst. The director took a year to make season 2 he should have known what everyone wanted.I hope that it would have ended without only season 1 at least we could have thought that jojo and sun-oh ended together,i should have not hoped a lot from season 2.In the end the happiest thing i watched during the show was yuk-jo and sun-oh.They were main lead for me

Very disappointed

I was waiting for this season after watching it’s first season which I really loved. But what did I get after waiting for almost 2 years. Disappointment ! I felt the chemistry between jojo and sunho since the beginning of the first season and because of this I was eagerly waited for second season to be aired. But makers really make me hit on wall with a question mark. Guys, what did you do with this garbage storyline, made love alarm from the top of the mountain to the bottom of the ocean. Please don’t watch season 2 if you don’t want to disappoint yourself and don’t want to waste your time.
