In the first place, I decided to watch this movie because I liked the poster and because I like everything related to gangsters. But sweet Jesus, the violence! I have never watched anything as brutal, gritty and raw. There is a scene when you can hear how someone's eyes are being dug out from their sockets. That's something I can't shake off my mind, like ever. At some scenes, I had to close my eyes and I am not a sensitive person. So if you like blood splatter and all the gore, go for this. This movie is all about the violence and a lot less about anything else. The violence was the best part, anyway.

Acting is decent, I don't have complains or praises. The characters stay distant and there is not much development; they are sort of bland and boring. The plot solely concentrates on taking revenge without much drama. Well, there is a bit of drama but it remains hollow and completely unnecessary. The female character's purpose in this movie is questionable. And personally, I found it hard to connect with any of the characters. The ending had an impact, but I think it was very predictable. And there were some plot holes that could have been easily avoided. A lot of things in this movie happen, sort of, all of a sudden and leave you wondering.

All in all, I think Soo is the type of movie you either like or dislike. It's a mediocre action flick, which doesn't leave you with much to say.

This movie is totally crazy. It is about mobs and revenge. There is no sweetness at all. Once Tae Soo starts to take revenge for his twin, Tae Jin's death, it is amazing. Ji Jin Hee's character Tae Soo is an assassin, but he isn't typical. He doesn't seem to have the stealth or finesse that you usually see in a movie. He also doesn't act like he isn't in pain when he gets hurt. It is refreshingly real. The action is gruesome. If you aren't into that, then you probably won't enjoy this movie. If you are the type of person that likes revenge stories, then this is a drama that you would enjoy.

A forgotten revenge thriller from the standard-def era

PROS
+ Cool and stylish neo film noire structure and atmosphere
+ Incredibly interesting plot (with some issues in execution)
+ Some nice acting performances that remind me of the silent era with the exaggerated motions and expressions

CONS
- The first half is well done, however the second act unravels a bit with its pacing
- All of the action is presented in an uninteresting way with slow movements, knife fights, floor grabbing/stabbings, etc. (not much kinetic action to be seen)
- A lot of scenes are slow, silent, and have sub context to be pondered which makes the direction feel like a straight up drama rather than a satisfying thriller

- - - - -
Honestly, this wasn't really what I wanted or expected, but I'm glad I watch it! Soo makes up for its short-comings with a lot of interesting ideas in its plot, tone, and strangely haunting final fight.

If you watch Soo, pay attention and soak in the aesthetics and you'll surely enjoy something about it like I did!

6.5/10
