1. The Young Lady of The General's House
Chinese Drama - 2020, 30 episodes
Review
General's Lady" is a light-hearted drama with some political intrigue thrown in. It's mainly about a young woman who is the daughter of a concubine and the devilish general who serves at the frontier lines. I really enjoyed this drama, particularly the way the main leads loved each other. The addition of two other couples was a nice touch.
While I loved the story, the female lead often confused and annoyed me. At times, she came off as really childish, but then she would show maturity when discussing problems with her husband, only to do a complete 360 and revert back to her childish self.
Another issue I had was communication. It frustrated me a lot when they didn't talk to each other, which led to misunderstandings, especially on the female lead's side. I understood that the male lead wanted to protect her, but it caused so much unnecessary trouble. That said, most of the misunderstandings and communication issues were resolved fairly quickly. Which was so good and so different from most other dramas .
The story seemed to forget its main point until the last couple of episodes, which I really dislike in a drama. But overall, I truly enjoyed this series. It had a lot of love and many passionate kisses; they were so intense with each other, both in love and in their fights.
One thing to note is that I really loved the music; it was beautiful -
2. Because This is My First Life
Korean Drama - 2017, 16 episodes
Review
Because This Is My First Life is a romantic drama Nam Se-Hee and Yoon Ji-Ho, both in their 30s, who enter a contract marriage for practical reasons. Se-Hee is a quiet, introverted guy who owns a house but struggles with his finances and the pressure of his personal and social life. Ji-Ho is a passionate yet struggling writer, facing societal pressure to settle down and frustrated with her position as an assistant writer. Their marriage is totally transactional—Se-Hee needs someone to share the rent, and Ji-Ho needs a place to stay.
As the story goes on, we also get to see Ji-Ho's two best friends, Su-Ji and Ho-Rang, and their own relationships, which were honestly a lot of fun to watch. I really loved the second lead couple and especially Sang Gu. Like, he was such a great character. Him and his agi (Su-Ji) made the show so much more enjoyable. If a couple like them ever becomes the main leads, ILL JUMP ON IT
Ho-Rang's character annoyed me at times, but I get why she acted the way she did—her boyfriend just didn’t share the same relationship goals. But still, I ended up loving them and rooting for themThere were a few things I didn’t love, though. Sometimes, the female lead’s acting felt a little too emotionless for a drama that’s all about love and emotions. What really dropped my rating was the last few episodes. Ji-Ho’s actions really got under my skin. I didn’t think what she did was right, but as the title says, it’s her "first life," so mistakes happen
Their relationship was different from anything I’ve seen in other dramas, and I did love their chemistry.
But overall, I really enjoyed the drama. It mixes romance, humor, and real-life struggles really well. The characters felt real, and watching them grow throughout the series was super satisfying. A few small things bothered me, but I’d still highly recommend it!
