Loved the Reunion of the Cast but the story was lacking.

I am a fan of most of the cast for their other work and I enjoyed watching the main couple when they got to be together but I had a very hard time completing this drama. The start of it was really nice. Fu Rong's family were the best of the clans, with Prince Su's mom being a close second. The second couple was okay, their relationship was sweet and much less angsty or challenged which gave us the audience a chance to enjoy their relationship. But I didn't come to the series to watch them.

Like many I wanted a redemption for ML where they could enjoy being married, going through challenges together. Which some level of trust and love. Instead the plot was perpetually pitting them against each other. Divorce seemed to always be on the table, and Fu Rong was often getting arrested. It felt like no one seemed to want this couple together. There are a few exceptions, like the second couple and Prince's mom, but it was a tenuous at best. It was very discouraging and tiresome to watch.

I grew to hate the king/emperor and his forever dissing of Fu Rong. She was setup so many times but he only cared about calling her a trouble maker and not good enough for his son.

Court intrigue is expected, but plots were very repetitive. Here was the formula:
- Setup Fu Rong for a crime
- Arrest her
- Prince Su tries to save her
- Prince An creates or adds a misunderstanding about Prince Su
- Princess Xihe hits on Prince Su
- Fu Rong and Prince Su separate
- Divorce/separating is on the table
- Prince Su/Fu Rong solve the case
- They are happy for about an episode or two
- Repeat

This happens three or four times, maybe not in the same order, but pretty close.

Perhaps it was wrong to expect so much of this drama because I loved "The Legend of Yun Xi" so much but I was disappointed all of the same. I almost didn't bother finishing this drama but stuck with it only so I could watch the modern era episodes.

I know my review is pretty scathing, but maybe if you watching this without expectations, you might like it more. There are definitely parts of this drama that are very enjoyable, just not enough.

Things I did like:
Prince Su - he was a lot more sweet and devoted than I expected.
Fight scenes - when there were ones were pretty cool
Fu family - nice people
Hair accessory business - was kinda cool to see
Fu Rong and Prince Su - when they worked together
Modern era - was fun to watch

Note I didn't give a failing grade to this drama out of blind loyalty and the fact that in the end I did complete it.

SUCH GOOD CHEMISTRY

I did not watch LOYX when I first started on this show, so I went in blindly without knowing any of the cast. I did watch cuts, so I know well enough to recognise parallel scenes and references to LOYX in Ruyi. However, one can enjoy Ruyi even without watching LOYX.

From what I understand, it is LOOSELY adapted from the novel, so I know some fans are very disappointed (but from my limited knowledge of C-dramas, I believe that's quite typical of adaptations anyway).

Story
To be fair, the show was far from perfect. There were some plotholes created by the deleted scenes (especially the dream sequences), and doubtful backstories and motivations for some of the villains. Still, I enjoyed everything else about the show.

Side characters that I absolutely love are Consort Shu, Guan Ge, Xu Jia, Ge Chuan and Lan Xiang.

I love to see characters develop through the storyline, and it was great, especially to see Fu Rong and Wu Bai Qi mature throughout the show.

I binged through the last 12 episodes, so it felt like a real emotional roller coaster for me, but it also helped to ease the angst a little. It helps that their angst usually doesn't go dragging beyond 2 episodes.

I felt the ending was a little too rushed, and things weren't explained too well, but I'm just so relieved things turned out great for the main characters. I wished Fu Rong's father wasn't sacrificed for the story; the family deserved a happy ending. :( I felt terrible for Prince Huai, and I wished Qi Zhu had a better closure with Fu Rong.

One point I thought was kind of weird was that Fu Rong kept having doubts of Xu Jin throughout the show and she easily believed Xu Ping. Yet, with one word from Yuan, she immediately doubted Xu Ping.

OST
Absolutely love!! Some songs gave me the LOYX vibes, but I love it. I still wish ZZH & JJY did a duet; it would have made it perfect.

Chemistry
SO GOOD. Well, the kissing scenes could have been better, but the sweetness and other actions well made up for it anyway.

Even the behind the scenes were great, but I'm hoping they will release more. Not as flirty as in LOYX bts imo, but we can still tell how well they work with each other. I'm hoping they get to work together again!

The second cp was absolutely adorable, and I felt that they actually had a better development in their transition from "rivals", to flirting to an actual couple than the main cp.

Production
I think this is quite typical of C-dramas, not too sure why but I caught bad transitions between scenes - e.g. where Xu Jin had 3 layers on, and three seconds later, when the camera pans back at him, he had 1 layer off; or when his hand closed over hers, and then the next scene it wasn't, but they zoomed in and showed the closing over action again.

The make-up was a bit off, especially for JJY at times, but I absolutely love her costumes. She looks really good in cream and red. I cannot stop talking about the main couple's visuals in the show!!

Acting
I love how JJY has evolved incredibly since LOYX. Everyone else did great, but for me, ZZH's acting really shone - all those heartbreaking scenes (well I kind of laughed a little at the first crying confession scene because he was kind of cute there), especially the rescue coffin scene (/shivers) and those subtle cues and facial expressions (even when the camera wasn't focused on him).

Rewatch Value
Yes, absolutely, though I might fast forward some scenes of the annoying characters.

Also, will we still get the modern time special episodes???

When I found out that the team behind Legend of Yun Xi were back in another drama, I had to check it out. And to find out that Ju Jing Yi and Zhang Zhe Han are paired out again not to mention that some of the casts from the first drama are also in this drama made me so excited that I had to watch and I could honestly say that this is also a gem.

STORY:
The story seems like an alternate dimension or possibly another life after the events of Legend of Yun Xi. There was no confirmation for this but this is what I feel. It follows Fu Rong (Ju Jing Yi) as someone who slightly can predict her future and her future tells her to not cross paths with Xu Jin (Zhang Zhe Han) or else she will suffer a terrible fate. But as they are the leads of the story they definitely cross paths....multiple times and sometimes in a comical way. They eventually get married like the first drama, but here she was just a consort and not a duchess. The plot seemed similar yet different at the same time although if I would compare the two, this story is a bit lighter than the first. Since the characters here were also from the first drama, I could see the mother in law in LoYX as the female lead's mother here, the female antagonist in LoYX is now her sister whom she is very close with, the male lead's brother in LoYX is now a subordinate of the duke in this story....those kind of connections. It felt good to see familiar faces. The ending of this drama is far more better than the first one that it got me thinking: is this a fan service for the viewers who didn't like the ending of LoYX? Plus, the most important part is that I enjoyed the bonus 4 episodes with some of the cast and the leads in modern times.

ACTING/CAST:
I have nothing to say about the chemistry of the leads because it has been proven and tested during LoYX. As a fan of their chemistry, I appreciate the fact that the same team directed them. They know best how they work and I can see that they are more at ease in this drama. The drama is lighter and Zhang Zhe Han's character is a bit more expressive in this drama than the first one which I liked very much. I have nothing to say but I REALLY LIKE THEM ACTING TOGETHER. Also, Zhang Zhe Han in historical costumes is still so prettyyyyyy. I want them to have another drama either in the modern times or a crime thriller perhaps? Though they are well-suited in historical dramas. I just want them to act as a pair in another drama again.

MUSIC:
Yes, the music. I love this drama's OST. I also added the songs in my playlist. What surprised me though is that Ju Jing Yi can sing. She sang some of the memorable songs in this drama and I liked it so much.

REWATCH VALUE:
Yes. Need I say more? Just, yes.

Really exited with this drama when it came out. Of course like most of the fans here, exited because of Ju Jing Yi and Zhang Zhe Han meet again together in the drama. But after watching & read some of the review here, I have to agreed with them. This drama have many plot holes that make our eyebrow rise. But is that make this drama bad....? I don't think so. For me this drama still good enough to watch, apart from the cast.

Plot holes that makes me wonder:
* They already have interesting plot by using dream. But why they are not develop it more. It just like piece in here & there.
* Xu Ping / Prince An (XP) motive very bad. Yeah he just make conclusion about who killed his mom without even make confirmation or at least try to know the truth. And the way he protect Fu Rong (FR) is really questionable. He wants to protect her but in the same time he put FR in the 'lion den' (Xu Jin/Prince Su (XJ) house) by letting them get married. He want to make FR free by letting her get buried with XJ and than rescued her...??? What the hell... Where is his logic...?? All over the place....!!!
* The reason to choose Cui Wan [Princess of Xihe] to be political bride never been explained.
* The stupid way of how FR actually come to life or heal after get poisoned in ep 40.
* Of course the biggest question of all: Why the need for modern time...? They have happy ending in ancient time, why make the modern time...? Is it preview for the second season or what...? Who have answer please please please write in the comment, i really want to know...

What i like:
* The plot where the prince try to killed each other is not about just because struggle for the Crown Prince, but other factor. Usually the writer just develop about the struggle for the crown prince. But here, because of greed & revenge. Very interesting to see even though Prince Cheng and Consort Duan already in the palace with all the money in the world, they still very greed.
* Of course the chemistry between Ju Jing Yi and Zhang Zhe Han. They have more chemistry here than in legend of Yun Xi. Love how Zhang Zhe Han in here smile more than in legend of Yun Xi.
* How the second lead couple interact with each other. I also think Fu Xuan (FX) & Wu Bai Qi (WBQ) more adorable than FR & XJ. How WBQ like to tease FX but also how he protect her. But also frustrated why he doesn't propose her, even after they relationship became better.

Overall: Yeah the fans of Ju Jing Yi and Zhang Zhe Han should watch this, especially if you the fans of legend of Yun Xi, it like a little bit closure for they story. Apart from all the plot holes, this drama still good a drama to watch. But for me this drama is not for re-watch, one time is enough for me.

Wonderful chemistry CP

To be honest, I watch for this couple only and only because of this couple I watched it till the end.
I'm pretty sure the leads also feel the same with the weak storyline as I have heard them complaining about the plots a few times from some behind the scenes clips. I'm guessing they are obliged to finish what they started in the Legend of Yunxi and to give this couple a beautiful end. The production is better than Yunxi, gorgeous scenery and costumes.
I absolutely adore this couple, I can't explain why, their chemistry is strong, very pleasing and comfortable. They don't need steamy kisses to seal the deal.
I'm also loving the special modern episode which gives of a vibe like The Eternal Love 2 or even Goblin. Of course most of it makes no sense since it's only a short special for fan service. I'm not gonna complain since the ending bed scene was super sweet.
I definitely hope they will collaborate again with better storyline.

Not worth your time

This drama started out strong and kept me interested until around episode 18 or 19 (I forgot). I really like the chemistry between Zhang Zhe Han and Ju Jing Yi as the ML and FL and the first half was filled with interesting interactions between those two, as well as some sweet moments that made me go through a couple of times. When I get past that half-way mark, particularly after they became a married couple, the story is lost on me, it becomes draggy, and FL becomes a very annoying, selfish and unreasonable character a lot of the times. I felt that there are some plot holes and the political part of the story I thought was a mess, and the ending, although a happy one, felt a bit rushed to me. Similar to other reviewers' comments, the motivation behind Duke An's revenge and his jealousy seems like a lame part of the story. They could have developed the story better and make him a better villain. Acting is just so-so, and to be honest I'm only watching this for Zhang Zhe Han, but even then I thought his acting here is just so-so.

I have to give a special mention to the second ML and FL Wu Bai Qi and Fu Xuan. They're so sweet, Wu Bai Qi is my favorite character in this drama. I would have given this drama a lower rating if not for him and ZZH's sweet moments with JJY.

Music is okay, but I found that no particular song (opening or ending theme) strikes my fancy and I did not add any of the songs from this series to my playlist. Maybe if i am more emotionally invested in the series, the songs would be nicer to listen to as I reminisce the moments from the series, but noooooooooo.....

Rewatch Value: NO WAY. I have a long list of dramas to watch, so I am not coming back to watch this draggy and boring drama.

I would not recommend you watching this drama, except you are an even bigger fans of Zhang Zhe Han than I am and can be content with poor story lines as long as you can see his handsome face (because we won't see him again in future dramas :(... sad)

A flawed yet intriguing watch

I was very neutral going into this drama because I had no background on this drama. I had tried Legend of Yun Xi so the only thing familiar with me were the leads and not the writer herself. I wish I knew that because my expectations would have been lower as Yun Xi wasn't a drama that worked for me at all.

STORY:
This drama started well, but I still felt the draw into its world wasn't enough. The script wasn't the best neither was the editing, but this drama had a charm that kept me keep going. There are some interesting aspects to it and some very boring and frustrating ones. I feel like I needed more closure or wanted to watch more of certain aspects which weren't fully covered. The drama's weak and strong point are the politics, mystery and the romance. It's like the drama did things very well only to make it a bore after a few episodes and only to become interesting again. It was like someone switching on and off my interest in the plot. There are still some underused plotlines and some got set up well only to waste the potential. I'll spare it some criticism due to its editing given the Censorship rules but I don't think it would have made too great of a difference.

ROMANCE & CHARACTERS:
I was intrigued by the romance and tried my best to enjoy the slow burn. The main couple are sweet and have good chemistry, but the plot made their romance seem forced. Honestly it could have not been there and it would have made no difference. The OTP's romance were never central to the plot at all. The skinship and kisses were lacking for both couples. The secondary couple had some excellent potential but it fell flat by the end too as there wasn't much story left there either. The problem was the writing and mediocre characterization. Fu Rong was cute with a potential to grow only to become flat and unimpressive. She became an unrecognizable version of herself after ep 18ish and was inconsistent as heck. Duke An was alright and loved Fu Rong but the script didn't leave much for him to do. There was practically no growth in his character. Prince An made for lovely eye candy and a decent 'evil guy'. Wu Bai Qi was more layered than other characters and I loved his dedication and loyalty for Fu Xuan. Fu Xuan gets saved thanks to her interactions with Wu Bai Qi so I'll spare her the criticism.

ACTING:
This drama is similar to The Legends in one aspect. It gets saved thanks to its cast. They all suited the roles they got and gave it their best. I am oddly impressed by Ju Jing Yi and Zhang Zhe Han because they aren't good actors but somehow their acting skills were sufficient for this drama. Kiki Xu had a decent attempt as well and I'm impressed at her. It was my first time seeing Wu Bai Qi and Prince An actors but I really loved them. They definitely have better potential and emoted better than the others.

REWATCH VALUE:
No way. It's one-time watch at best with challenges.

OVERALL:
In the end there are no memorable moments but I enjoyed its run. It never had me obsessed but intrigued enough to keep going. The writing towards the end was a cop out and the ending made little sense. I am likely to forget some side characters but the charm of the actors and their interactions is what I will remember of this drama.

Guilty Pleasures of Ruyi Pavilion

The Blooms at Ruyi Pavilion makes me feel two very contradictory feelings. On one hand, it was very enjoyable watch with many satisfying romantic moments - thanks to Ju Jing Yi and Zhang Zhe Han as well as the second couple. On the other hand, the storytelling and editing was just problematic at times and as much i am trying to accept it as something that was necessary to happen for this drama to be even released, it crossed a certain line at some point and it became annoying.

= CHARACTERS =
Fu Rong is a clumsy naiive lead with some moments of brilliance, while Xu Jin is that typical cool stone-faced ml. What i appreciate on their dynamics is that (as opposed to Legend of Yun Xi) male lead showed his emotions and love for female lead a lot and oh boy! he really did love her a lot!! ZZH did amazing job with portraying Xu Jin.
Anyways, it actually does not really matter what kind of characters the main lead were, as long as they were played by Ju Jing Yi and Zhang Zhe Han. Their chemistry is just… unparalleled.
Fu Xuan and Wu Bai Qi as a couple were very charming and fun to watch and enhanced the mood of the drama to a more classy level.
Side characters, although not very well fleshed-out, were quite enjoyable including characters that were infuriating on purpose like Cui Wan and other side-side kicks.
Character-wise, the worst one is definitely the villain. Quite honestly, it’s been a long time since i’ve seen a villain so pathetic. His origin story was pathetic, his schemes were desperate, and just overall all his manipulations were despicable.

= STORY =
This is an idol drama, and i think it’s unfair to expect some super deep and unique plot. Actually, the premise and the storylines that were hinted at/attempted at are in general okay. At times, it was very engaging, and although i feel like some storylines could have gone a different route at times to be more interesting (or! at least not dropped halfway!), i found the story itself still quite satisfying. There are several plot holes but i guess i am willing to overlook them for the sake of my own sanity and the fact that i enjoyed the drama. In my opinion, the plot comes secondary as this whole drama is mostly character-driven, and it proved to be fun to watch despite its various weaknessess.

Based on all those abrupt and unusual cuts, missing side-character storylines that you just know must have been there /somewhere/ as well as lack of scenes that would usually seamlessly connect two different scenes together, i am guessing that the production had to cut the drama shorter and im just glad that this drama was released and i guess we just have to accept that.

= GUILTY PLEASURES =
So… i know that based on what i wrote until now, it might seem like the drama is “so so” at best but i had actually amazing time watching this show! It hits all the right spots for me: visually stunning set and beautiful costumes, cute female lead, dreamy male lead who loves female lead infinitely, good humor, amazing soundtrack, my favourite tropes, some good action scenes and enjoyable “shocking” plot twists, lovable side characters characters, several fun callbacks to Legend of Yun Xi, and many many sweet soft romantic moments between main leads. Like… seriously, each and every single episode had a /moment/ between main leads that made me more or less swoon.

= REWATCH VALUE =
I’ve already rewatched it at least once and i actually see myself rewatching it again in the future. so… yeah. The amount of tender moments Fu Rong and Xu Jin share together is almost impossible to count and it’s so satisfying to watch (especially if you felt like Legend of Yun Xi just was not very generous in this area). JJY and ZZH are /that/ good together.

Overall, this is probably a 8/10 or even 7,5/10 drama, but i had such a good time watching BARP, despite some hiccups, that i am willing to rate it 8,5/10 while admitting that in my heart, it’s rated more like 9/10 but i dont want my rating to be too outrageous.

The ending was weird, even though happier than the one from Yunxi Zhuan

I was hesitant to watch the drama as I expected a remake of "The Legend of Yunxi". But a few rewies made it very clear that the storyline is different and just the actors are the same.
I didn't expect much and I didn't get much.
The drama started good, but the female lead repeats her mistakes all the time and just doesn't learn, the characters are overly cliché and the main couples chemistry in this drama seemed a bit off. To be honest I think the side couple's story was much better and way more realistic in the way their relationship developed and how the overall relationship was portraid... However, the actors did a good job and the storyline is ok.
What propably bothered me most, was that the ending was very abrupt and several questions left open. The last episodes seemed a bit chaotic, as if the writer didn't know how to fit all the loose strings into the remaining episodes... and not enough with the sudden endin they even added an extra ending that puts the main characters into present time. Just why? In my opinion that was just unnecessary and very out of context...
But all in all it is a drama with a happy end and two sweet couples, so I guess for just passing the time it is still worth the while.

FL & ML slow development, good second pair

Similar character with Legend of Yunxi, but I prefer Legend of Yunxi. The romance development between FL & ML are too slow in this series.

Unlike the other dramas where FL gets bullied by her sister, in this drama FL has an older sister that really loves and pamper her. In addition, they not compete for the same man. Her older sister is an interesting second pair in this story.

The ML character is similar to the character in Legend of Yunxi. ML characters are less expressive and less attractive. Since the two dramas are different I hope the characters will be develop and different.

2nd ML is more interesting with his secret identity. Despite coming from a royal family, he wear a mask & has double identity that popular among citizen. The 2nd ML childhood story with FL make him look more close to FL than the ML. With 2nd ML kind and mysterious character I like him more. His acting is good. His character is completely different from his previous drama: I've Fallen for You.

goofy

i started watching this drama because ive recently been interested in snh48 and was just scrolling through jiang shan's discography only to find this drama. i became interested when i saw kiki xu and ju jingyi in the cast. ive heard ppl say jjy is not very good at acting but i didnt get far enough to see scenes where she had to express a greater range of emotion, so i think she did an okay job. personally i find her character(fu rong) hilarious just from the stupid things she does in the first few episodes. in the first scenes i laughed my ass off when she fell out of the tree that was just too funny. i couldnt help but to kick my feet everytime kiki (fu xuan) came on tho cus shes just so pretty. she and jinsoul from loona look so much alike; its so crazy to me so i mostly just stare at her face when shes on camera. acting wise, the second male leads pissed me off. the way he moves his mouth is just weird. the guy fu xuan was paired with was okay tho i liked him more than the other men in the show and hes more aesthetically pleasing than the others. his character lowkey made me mad too cus like get away from her!! but he cant for the plot so ? i have no complaints about the male lead cus i skipped most of the parts he was in cus i dont really like looking at him.

i dont care abt the romance in the show either cus i just watched it for the pretty girls but uhhh fl and ml relationship was boring fl 2ml was slightly better but got weird fu xuan and 507 was probably the best one romantically.

i think the best relationship in general was between the fu sisters. theyre just so sweet and you can tell they really care abt eachother. plus it was funny and endearing watching fu xuan getting fu rong outta all the situations she gets herself into. too bad the screentime between them was mostly in the first few eps cus they had to push the romance part for the plot.

funny thing is ig i watched this for jiang shan only for her to play the most annoying ass character but i got to give it to her she did a really good job ? good at acting straight. okay after finishing it she did a really good job acting in general like i see that character development!! song xinran also did a good job i liked her character rip. also i had no idea gnh48 zheng danni was fu rongs servant till the last episode lmao

to be honest i skipped most of the parts the men were in so i have no feelings about the plot so i gave them the benefit of the doubt and a rating of six. i think the only parts i would rewatch is when fu rong falls out of a tree. i will update this when i finish the show.
okay finished it and so much was going on lmao i think it was lowkey a waste of time but it was kinda silly so i dont mind. i think reading recaps is better than actually watching it tho
