Song Joong Ki's K-movie Bogota: City of the Lost is coming to Netflix on February 4.
Set against the backdrop of Bogotá, Colombia, Bogota: City of the Lost tells the story of a Korean immigrant who, out of desperation, turns to smuggling in this city of last hope. The story takes place in the aftermath of the IMF crisis, following Guk Hee (Song Joong Ki), who travels to Bogotá, Colombia from South Korea, the other side of the globe, with new hope of a better future.
Netflix released a trailer for the movie. It begins with a narration: "We won't be here for long, anyway. Think of this place as a tollgate. A tollgate to the States."
Guk Hee comes to Colombia all the way from South Korea hoping for a better future. But misfortune strikes him as, soon after he lands, his family is robbed of their savings. Desperate to survive, Guk Hee does whatever it takes to escape from misfortune.
He catches the eye of Sergeant Park (Kwon Hae Hyo), the most powerful figure in Bogotá's Korean community and smuggling market, who says to him, "I can see it in your eyes. You're different." He is also noticed by Soo Young (Lee Hee Joon), who works for Sergeant Park and tries to reel Guk Hee in on his side.
Sergeant Park assigns Guk Hee a task, saying, "Soo Young's gonna smuggle in some merchandise through customs. I want you to bring it to me, Guk Hee." Just as he begins to gain Sergeant Park's trust, Soo Young tries to tempt him, saying, "How about I make you an offer?"
In this "land of opportunity", Guk Hee does everything it takes to rise from the bottom, even risking his life. Will he achieve the success he dreams of?
Bogota: City of the Lost, which had a production cost of 12.5 billion won, has had a disappointing run at the domestic box office as it managed to garner about 420,000 moviegoers only. Its break-even point was at 3 million moviegoers.
